Robin Thicke’s Blurred lines video is highly sexulised, and promotes sex. He uses women in his

video to demonstrate this, thus women being represented as objects. This is shown through the use of Mise en scene, editing and cinematography.

Mise en scene: LocationThe location is set in a studio, with a blank white screen that makes the people stand out. Towards the end of the video , there is writing on the wall ‘Robin Thicke has a big -------’. This can only suggest his genitals, thus attempting to come across as a alpha male. This can also be proved through costume.

Mise en scene: Costume

In the video , the men wear suits to portray dominance, whereas the women are wearing little white clothing with red lipstick. This indicates red to represent sex , and white to represent innocence and vulnerability. As it is mentioned within the lyrics ‘ Good girl’ which is associated with white as pure and virgin. This would then give a sexulised representation of women , that can only suggest they are sex objects.

The video contains many close ups of the women and medium shots that show the men with the women. From this you can infer that the men are using the women to increase their male status. This can be supported by the use of editing

Although the song is seen demeaning to women and promotes the idea of women being used for sex, the lyrics clearly state ‘he tried to domesticate ya, but you're an animal’. This demonstrates that the video does not belittle women, into domesticated roles, therefore it is not against women. None the less , men are still portrayed to be more powerful than women, and that the positive side to them is their sex appeal, which gives false ideology to how women should look and demonstrates a hegemonic representation.
