A : Another character

Hakim was a strange man. He lived in a small wooden hut that he built on his own. Everyday, he

would walk around his hut collecting insects. And in the evening, he mixed all these insects in a glass jar,

cooked them over a small fire and ate them for dinner. The strange thing was, Hakim was once a doctor.

He once drove a Mercedes and wore a smart suit and tie. Now he only had a pair of torn jeans and a

greasy t-shirt. This all started a year ago.

B : You

I took off my sunglasses as we approached my grandfather’s house. It looked dull. I was ecstatic

about the school holiday but my parents decided to visit my sick grandfather. I was never close to him.

In fact, I had never even met him. I soon realized that I hated old people.

Start by describing a place

A : Very shocking

What an ugly hotel! I regretted in joining my friends for this trip to Miri. The beds were too hard,

the toilet was dirty, and worst of all the carpet had red stains all over. Even the smell was horrible, like

someone left a dead cat somewhere. I felt like running out of the room but my friends had not arrived

yet. Their flight was delayed. So I decided to take a short nap. Before I could even rest my head on the

hard pillow, my eyes caught some movement in the toilet. Was there someone else in the room?

B : Slow description

The jungle soon grew darker as we tried to find our way out. My friend and I got lost in the

jungle right after we decided to fetch water from the river for our camping group. Just as we began to

lose hope, we saw a faint flicker of light in the distance. As we dragged our feet through the mud, we

began to see a small dilapidated house and a candle flicking through its only window. Inside, we could

see a shadow jumping around its walls. Someone was inside! We sighed a sigh of relief as we felt safer.

However, our night was about to turn into a horrific episode we would never forget.

Last year, my friends and I decided to go for an adventurous trip to an isolated island near

Jerudong. No one lived in the island, which was why we thought it would be the best place for a

camping trip and nights of fishing and hunting.

It was on 22nd September 2008 when my best friend died of a road accident. I remembered it

well as she was like a sister to me. We became so close the moment she started sleeping over at my

house. She even called my mother ‘mom’ and had a bed of her own to sleep in. Last week was her

birthday so I wished her a happy birthday before I slept. That night, a cold wind jolted me up. As my

body shivered in the chill, the wind became a faint sound of a whisper.
