State District Superintendent’s Retention/Promotion Plan
& Summer School
Paterson Public SchoolsReport Card Night, School No 7
April 2012
During the 2nd Marking Period, Dr. Cardillo began to identify students who were at risk for not being promoted and possible retentions.
Dr. Cardillo met with each of those families.
Criteria was based on: Report cards Star Assessments (preliminary data) Emotional/Social Referrals (School 7
Habits of the Mind Rubric)
Background
Using the District Policy (#5410) this has become a larger issue for all of our children.
The majority of our students fall into this category.
Now we have a District Wide Plan
Possible Retention
Possible Re-tentionNon Retention
The Remediation Plan
Report Card + Letter=Summer School
Summer school + criteria= promotion
Every student who receives a letter attached to his/her report card is a potential candidate for a mandatory 4-week summer school program.
Begins July 9th -August 3rd (20 days)
Students who attend will be monitored to meet the benchmark by the end of the program and if they meet criteria they will be promoted.
If a student is required to attend summer school based on their inability to meet the criteria for promotion, then retention in the grade level is automatic.
Remember this is District mandate, therefore every school in Paterson will be working within this mandate.
If a student transfers over the summer his records will automatically follow him to the new school through the NJ Smart System.
What happens if I do not attend mandatory summer school?
Promotions will be based on the following:◦NJ ASK Test Scores◦Star Assessment Proficiency Levels◦Report Card Grades◦Principal and Teacher Recommendations
◦Emotional/Social Referrals (School 7 Habits of the Mind Rubric)
Basis for Promotions
