THE JOURNEY FROM START
1926 – Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC), a private company was given permission to setup 2 stations.
July 23-1927 – Bombay station
August 26-1927 – Calcutta Station
With 3000 radio licensed owners back in those days.
March 1930 – IBC Liquidated April 1930 – Government took over and formed
Indian State Broadcasting Services(ISBS). 2 years later BBC broadcasting was started in
India. June 8-1936 – ISBS was renamed as All India
Radio(AIR). 1957 – Vividh Bharti Started with programmes
like Binaca GeetMala by Amin Sayani. Also renamed as AKASHVANI.
1967 – Vividh Bharti Was Commercialized.
1976 – AIR and Doordarshan were seperated, Prasar Bharti Act came into existence. Was
passed in 1990. But act implemented in September 1997.
FM WAVE - Phase I
1995 – AIR decided to open FM stations to private players. Then the growth actually started to happen.
Auctioning of FM bands to private players started.
21 stations commissioned across 12 cites in India. Increased to 108 radio frequencies across 40 cities.
Radio mirchi was the 1st private station set up by The Times Group
India’s 1st private FM station came up in Bangalore.
Reasons Of Downfall
Strict Government Policies. Unviable High License Fee. Low Advertisement Flow. Technology Getting Better. Cheaper And Faster Sources Of Entertainment
Available. Initial Downfall Euphoria Happened In 1999.
Resurgence – Phase II
338 frequencies for radio stations in 91 cities were on block.
Government Awards 280 licenses for a total sum of $250 million i.e. (907 crore) as OTEF i.e. One Time Entry Fees.
Sun, Adlabs, HT Music, ENIL, emerge as the leaders with nationwide footprint.
Government Introduced new revenue sharing model.
Phase III – Yet to Take Off……
Initially Planned in 2010 But Is Delayed. Government expected to open bid for over 700
new stations, most of it in smaller towns. In the third phase we might see private players
allowed by government to broadcast news except of only updates.
Government to allow increase in FDI from 20% to 26%.
Reduced license fee to 1/10th of previous amount
