DESCRIPTION
I am working at KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service) in Malindi, as a volunteer of JICA. My job is teacher of environment. This presentation is about introduction about the Red List. Also, it contained case study about how indigenous species faced to endangered caused by human.

Outline What is Red List? What is happening now? Reasons of species faced to endangered Case Study: Raccoon in Japan Rank of Red List Endangered species in Kenya Case Study: Polar Bear in North Pole Conclusion
What is Red List? List of endangered
species. Published by IUCN. 156,000 species are
listed in 2004. IUCN
In 1948, GOV and NGO gathered and established biggest environmental NGO in the world.
IUCN: International Union for Conservation of Nature
What is happening now? According to the report of IUCN, extinction
speed caused by human is 1000 times faster than fossil age.
If we continue development, extinction speed will accelerate 10 times, compare with today.
Now, we conclude treaty to stop mass extinction,
such as ・ Convention on Biological Diversity ・ Washington Treaty ・ Ramsar Treaty ・ Law for Preservation of Species
Reasons of species faced to endangered
More than half species on the earth are living in Rain Forest
But…①Habitat loss② Climate change③ Introduced species④ Exceed hunting/poaching ( For food 、 ornament 、 commerce, etc…)⑤ Too much nutrient in the water ( water pollution )
For Fur→
←For medicine
For pets→
←For food
Raccoon (Arai-Guma) Introduced from USA and Canada. Clever to use hands. People wanted it for pets. because of ANIME.
Problem; Raccoon is fury.
Case Study: Japan
Rank of Red List
CR High possibility to extinct very soon. EW Extinct in nature, sustain by human. EN High possibility to extinct near future. VU High possibility to endangered. NT No problem now, but could be VU in
the future, if habitat change.
Endangered species in Kenya 1 14 species are listed in endangered in Kenya. ● Anthreptes orientalis ● Atoconeura kenya ● Bauhinia mombassae ● Diospyros shimbaensis ● Euphorbia tanaensis ● Ficus faulkneriana ● Galagoides cocos
Endangered species in Kenya 2 ● Gigasiphon macrosiphon ● Lygodactylus grandisonae ● Micrelaps bicoloratus ● Serinus buchanani ● Surdisorex populus ● Synsepalum subverticillatum ● Ziziphus robertsoniana
Case Study: Polar Bear
Reason ① Global Warming:
Ice berg melt.Difficult to get seals, and also baby bear fell into ocean.
↓ ② Habitat Loss:
Get hungry, so search food in human residence. And sometimes hurt people. ↓ ③ Now and Future: Human use bear-dog and expel Polar Bear from
human residence. However, if their habitat losing continuously, polar bear will be extinct in the near future.
Conclusion How can we protect species from
extinction?①3R and to reduce using fossil fuel.②To understand what is happening on the
earth in the past, now, and future.③To pay attention to movement of the world,
such as new treaty, and conference.④And think about species faced to extinct.
