What is mental ‘illness’

• Deep distress that causes anguish, to the extent that, it brings a split of the consciousness of a person

• Making them dysfunctional and socially mal-adjusted

What is Recovery from MI

• Regaining functionality in multiple domains

• Living a life like anyone else • Reclaiming social, financial, emotional,

familial, spiritual and individual roles• Living in an age-appropriate and socially

responsible manner

Can people really recover?

• Many recover from even the most severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

• And more live reasonably well adjusted lives and cannot be easily identified

• With drug based interventions• Or with non drug based methods

Rehab Vs. Recovery

Those who rehabilitate successfully

Take drug treatments and consult with their psychiatrists off and on

And sometimes also go to a counselor or psychologist/therapist

Those who recover successfully• Are not dependent on any

drugs to curb their moods, or other fluctuations

• Often have looked for and found alternatives

• Recover as a complex interplay of circumstances and efforts

What/who is a recovery consultant

• Psychiatrist?• Psychologist/therapist/counselor?• Social worker?• Peer supporter?• Academic?• Artist?

Possible Attributes of a Recovery Consultant

• Usually someone who has experienced mental illness of a serious nature

• Has known the effects of psychiatric medication over a long period of time

• Has successfully recovered from mental illness her/him-self, and understands the process from multiple positions

• Works in simplifying aspects of mental distress from many positions
