What are we doing to grow estate and other planned giving?

Planned Giving ❖ Attorney Mike Witzke, a local Polish American

attorney who was married at our main chapel, has volunteered to offer a free will or comparable estate planning document as a donated item at the Patronal Feast and upcoming OLS silent auctions. He's also offered to do seminars for us.

❖ Estate Planning services as silent auction items at OLS silent auctions will gauge interest.

❖ Possibilities: Work with parishes and other nonprofits to sponsor one or more planned giving seminars on our campus.

Targeting younger supporters online

Digital Marketing ❖ First pilot emailer went out on Giving Tuesday November 29,

generating more than $1,000 in gifts. Our colleagues at Gabriel Richard High School in Ann Arbor tried the same experiment and generated just $50 that day.

❖ Targeted social media posts have greatly boosted engagement among targets (such as men ages 25-34 in Poland).

❖ Helped formation house complete updated website in Poland.

❖ Completing Orchard Lake YouTube Channel. Asked Prep video team to begin live streaming as many OLS events as possible including the Chancellor's Christmas Concert. Videos of events help us reach out to prospects. Latest stats: 59 percent of viewers are in the USA followed by Poland (11 percent), Germany (5.5 percent) and Canada (4 percent).

Growth Opportunities

❖ Friends of St. John Paul II, Be Not Afraid Foundation moved its activities to OLS to support activities related to honoring JPII and his teachings.

❖ Campus Visit: John DeJak, author/editor of new book of Walter Ciszek writings (one of two alumni up for sainthood) is making multiple speaking appearances on campus next month.

❖ Working with U-M to arrange visits from Jim Harbaugh and/or U-M Athletic Director Warde Manuel. Orchard Lake is hosting the Polish American Priest Association's national convention in April, bringing nationally-known speaker/author Father Michael Gaitley.

❖ Just 7 percent of Catholics make 80 percent of the gifts and do 80 percent of the volunteering. Working with Polonia and Catholic groups to identify and befriend more of those "doers" from groups like Polish Century Club (350 members plus wives), Our Lady of Good Counsel Men's Prayer Group in Plymouth (200 members), honorary alumnus Dr. Clark Okulski's Catholic talks (about 40 devout Catholics), Friends of Polish Art, American Polish Cultural Society, Polish American Congress (Michigan/Detroit and Ann Arbor) to renew relationships with some OLS alumni and a greater number of people of Polish descent. Some of our best/most active prospects are "joiners'' who participate in multiple events and like seeing us helping.

Anatomy of a big gift: Matchmaking

❖ The essential question of marketing and religion is "Why?''

❖ Many of our largest givers have felt a loss (widowed, loss or lack of a child or family illness).

❖ Father Bryan explains, "When you really need help, you can often forget your own anxiety by offering to go out and help someone else.''

Recent relationship development❖ For Joan Spiroff, her offspring is piano music. She played at Olympia when she

was young.

❖ A few years ago, neighbors asked the Spiroffs to volunteer at the fair and they enjoyed themselves.

❖ In December 2015, they came to the Christmas Concert and saw a need (that our piano was in sad shape) and Joan felt called to get us a new one as she has for other schools.

❖ We invited them to Ambassadors and had a special recital for them last spring and have stayed in regular contact.

❖ In December 2016, they were celebrated as they heard their new piano.

❖ Soon after, they agreed to start a scholarship for students who are U.S. citizens who play the piano.

❖ They're joining Ambassadors this spring.

How OLS received its biggest gift❖ March 24, 2004: Monsignor Milewski wrote Dr. Edward Wikeria (a Dearborn Heights

dermatologist) ministering to him on the recent loss of his wife, Josephine. He suggested ways to memorialize her. Knowing Dr. Wikeria's love of "all things Polish,'' he sent a personalized Campaign for the Orchard Lake Schools prospectus and suggested naming the Polish Rare Book Room in her name.

❖ April 12, 2004: Dr. Wikeria expressed interest in establishing a fund devoted to "the study and dissemination of Polish history and culture.''

❖ Regent Gerry Gorcyca, an attorney, began discussions on the best way to structure the gift. They settled on a "non-operating foundation'' for "the benefit of the Polish cultural mission'' of OLS.

❖ January 2005. Dr. Wikeria gave permission to complete the process, pledging $5 million followed by the remainder of his estate upon his death. The Wikerias had no children.

❖ 2006: Monsignor Ziemba prepares his vision for what a Polish Mission should look like.

❖ February 2010: Dr. Wikeria died

❖ . To date, the proceeds from this single gift have far exceeded the $15 million goal of the early 21st century Campaign for the Orchard Lake Schools.
