What social group does your main character represent and why?

Our main character represents teenagers and young adults who are wild and rebellious.

We decided to choose this social group because usually psychological thrillers aren’t based on wild and rebellious teenagers so we wanted to be different and introduce different social groups into the psychological thriller genre.

How do you represent your character through Mise-en-scene?

Costume, makeup and props:

-The pictures in the beginning of the best-friends helps to enhance the understanding of who the characters are. It introduces them so that the opening sequence makes more sense.

-The towel and the messy room represents her rebellious and careless personality.

-The mirror is a cliché prop that is used in psychological movies to reflect the psychological problem that only the character can see. Like in Kathryn when she is putting on her lipstick.

-Her outfit is mostly black to help with her characterisation and fit with her personality. It also establishes the idea that she has psychological problem.

-The dead best-friend’s outfit is modern but torn up and dusty to show that she is dead and she is the contrast to the character Kathryn. This is challenged due to it not being cliché.

The bag is Kathryn’s personal belonging that she grabs first as a sense of comfortable in order to feel safe and away from her dead ‘Best-friend’.

Facial Expressions and Body language:

Kathryns body language suggests that she is vulnerable when she sees her dead bestfriend for the first time.

Kathryns facial expression and body language show that she is scared and she is holding onto her bag as a sign of comfort.

Kates body language is very serious as if to show the audience that she is after Kathryn .

We can tell that Kathryn is beginning to panic through her facial expression.

Kathryns body language shows that she is in a hurry as she is trying to escape from Kate (her dead bestfriend) who is after her.

Kathryns facial expression shows that she is becoming scared about the fact that she can see her dead bestfriend.

Locations:

Her bedroom portrays her wild side showing that she is in her teens. The room is disheveled which suggests that she is an irresponsible teenager.

We filmed the outdoor scene to depict the freedom and rebelliousness of the main character. We also challenged the stereotype of a person with a psychological issue being isolated in a room where they feel comfort.

We filmed in a green area which portrayed Kathryn’s isolation because it is an abandoned area.

How do you represent your character through the camera shots and editing?

Our main character is represented as vulnerable, weak and scared through the camera shots and editing.

She is represented as vulnerable through close ups of her face when something drastic happens. We tried to use a lot of close ups to show her expressions and display her vulnerability.

We also tried to show her as weak and scared through quick paced editing to create tension, so the audience could put themselves in the main characters shoes and feel how she does.

At the end of our opening sequence we used a 360 shot to show the main character as isolated and vulnerable.

(Kathryn’s reaction during her 360 spin.

Our other character was represented as scary and creepy through camera shots such as close ups and long shots to show the whole character along with her facial expressions and costume playing a big part.

(Close up of Kate’s face) (Mid shot of Kate) (Long shot of Kate)

Through editing she was shown for a few seconds to build tension and create fear amongst the audience. As we tried to use a quick pace which was parallel to the music as she got closer to scare the audience. We tried to show her for fewer seconds to represent her as scary.

How do you represent your character through the music?

Through the music our main character is represented as a wild child/teenager at the beginning of the scene as she is listening to diegetic music.

However after that we used calm incidental music to represent her as innocent and calm. When the girl leaves the house the mood of the music changes and it turns more mysterious which is how she is represented as you want to know where she is going.

When the other character appears across the road from her the music begins to get louder which represents the characters tension and fear.

Towards the end the music used is really tense and scary which represents how scared the main character is.

The other character is represented as scary and creepy through the music as the sound effects she is given are boom sounds which are loud and contrast against the score music. As she appears more the music gets louder and darker. Which represents her dark character.
