How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Question 2

How is social class represented in my magazine?

The ‘character’ in my double page spread is portrayed as slightly lower/middle class but has worked to be where she is.

Although my audience is made up of a mixture of classes, this social class is most dominant. This is definitely reflected in the style of music magazine I have made and also in the language and style of my double page spread.

I chose to do this because it will help my target audience relate to the character as this is the social class I have aimed to catch the attention of.

There are certainly stereotypes and typical representations that exist around the social classes in my music magazine, of which I have supported by the style and colour of clothes used on the model in my double page spread, the colour scheme used throughout my magazine and again the language used throughout.

How are males and females represented in my magazine?

My magazine mainly features females, which is unusual for a magazine of the alternative-rock genre but I chose to develop this as a lot of people who answered my questionnaire were female, so I decided to change my target audience since writing my pitch.

When I researched media packs I found that the target audience was predominantly male as the style of music itself has a male audience and is made up of mostly males. I chose to challenge this stereotype by photographing a female for my front cover and DPS and using a female as the editor.

Are any ethnic groups represented, if so, who, why and how?  If there are no ethnic groups represented why?

My magazine is monocultural and features white females as the dominant ethnic group.

This is partly because of the style of music is mainly white, although recently has become more multicultural, and also due to regional identity.

Are teenagers or adults represented in my magazine? How are they represented?

Although there are some adults shown in my magazine, it is mostly teenagers who are represented.

The teenagers who are represented are around the same age as my audience, though they were younger when they were first interviewed. (This is mentioned in my double page spread)
