Outline1. Some history

2. Why work on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security?

3. Proposed R for D program

1. Some history

• 2002-2003 – Inter-centre working group on

climate change Nairobi meeting; Challenge

Program proposal

• 2006-2007 – ESSP-CGIAR prepared new

proposal Stakeholder meetings, regional

input Bali COP announced

• 2009

• Funds: EU, CIDA, WB, Danida

• Hired staff

• Planning/implementation

Page 4: Proposed CGIAR Mega Program Proposed CGIAR Mega Program Climate Change, Agriculture and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security

And then……the New

• Major reforms

• All work to be conducted in “Mega Programs”

(MPs)

• Climate Change MP proposed (“MP7”)

• CCAFS asked to lead development

• CP likely to be rolled into MP

Page 5: Proposed CGIAR Mega Program Proposed CGIAR Mega Program Climate Change, Agriculture and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security

Our strategy

• Make everything we do relevant to the new

realities in the CGIAR

• E.g. High-level meeting with private sector

(don’t even mention CP – focus on climate

change and food security)

• Use on-going implementation to “test” the

proposals in the MP concept

Page 6: Proposed CGIAR Mega Program Proposed CGIAR Mega Program Climate Change, Agriculture and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security

MP proposal development process

• CCAFS Management Team meet (March)

• GCARD – MP presented to diverse

stakeholders (April)

• CGIAR Contact Point Meeting (April)

• Nairobi meeting (May)

– What are the priorities?

– Inputs into the implementation in the target

regions

2. Why a program on Climate Change,

Agriculture and Food Security?

We also need a climate-

friendly agriculture
