The UN Convention on the Rights of Migrants defines a migrant worker as a "person who is to be engaged, is engaged or has been engaged in a remunerated activity in a State of which he or she is not a national.“

Migrants:

The following groups of people are described as being "people with migrant background": immigrant foreigners foreigners born in another country naturalised foreigners children with at least one parent who fulfils the specified criteria

People with migrant background do not necessarily have to have experience of migration. The majority of them may have been living in a country since they were born.Against the widely held belief, researches show that migrants are not a homogeneous group.They are characterized by a diversity of different personalities, social backgrounds and manifold media usage patterns. As a consequence policy measures, school projects or media coverage should be based more and should take in account more this existing diversity.

What is discrimination?Key words: direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, instruction todiscriminate, positive discriminationThe Equality Act prohibits discrimination on the grounds of age, racial orethnic origin, citizenship, language, religion or belief, opinion, state of health,disability, sexual orientation or other personal characteristics. The Actprohibits direct and indirect discrimination, harassment and instruction ororder to discriminate.Discrimination can be defined as unfair treatment of a person or class ofpersons in comparison to others, for example, because of their religiousbeliefs or because they belong to a sexual minority. An individual word orsituation can be classified as discriminatory or discrimination may be a resultof social structures.

Equality Act- a toolkit against discrimination

Direct discrimination means that a person is treated less favourably thansomeone else is, has been or would be treated in a comparable situation. An example of direct discrimination is if a member of a restaurant staffrefuses to serve a person because of his or her ethnic origin.

Indirect discrimination occurs when a person is put at a particulardisadvantage compared with other persons on the basis of a provision,criterion or practice that seems neutral unless the practice can be objectivelyjustified by a legitimate aim.

An example of indirect discrimination is if an employer demands that aprospective employee has a perfect command of Finnish even thoughthis is not necessary for the job.
