Today you are going to learn about print making.Print making is the process of making artwork by printing on paper.

What is the difference between drawing or painting and print making?

When you paint or draw you create a unique, original piece of artwork.

Page 4: Printing Animals

Prints are created from a single original surface. You can produce multiple images of the same piece. How is that done?

Page 5: Printing Animals

First you need to think of an animal you want to draw and use for your print.

Page 6: Printing Animals

Next, you will draw your animal on a piece of newsprint. You may draw as many sketches as you want but you will be choosing only one to make a print. Be sure your design includes textural elements like stripes, dots, squiggles and other patterns that appear on your animal.

Now you are ready to begin impressing your image onto Styrofoam. Be sure to use a dull pencil so your pencil doesn’t poke through the foam. The lines you press into the Styrofoam will come out white.

Now for the fun part! You can choose which colors you want to use for your print. You can mix two colors on the print to create a third color or use the ‘Brayer’ (a printer’s hand roller) to spread the ink in sections.

You will be making 3 prints of varied colors. To do this, place the paper on the Styrofoam, rub evenly over the entire surface and then carefully peel back the paper, lifting it off the Styrofoam. This is called “pulling a print”.

Here are samples of prints from two Duniway students.
