GROUP WORK IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION

INTRODUCTION

What is group?

According to oxford dictionary “A number of people or things that are located, gathered, or

classed together.”

WHAT IS GROUP WORK?

Group itself doesn’t have significance unless and until it involved in certain activity, thus the role of group work come into existence. Group work

as defined as “as a method of social work which help individual to enhance their social functioning through purposeful group experience and to cope more

effectively with their personal, group and community problems.” (Giselle Konopka)

BENEFITS OF GROUP WORK

• Personality develops gradually through interaction with different people.

• Helpful in decision making.

• New ideas will flow

• Work load will be distributed among members.

• Promotes democracy.

NEED OF GROUP WORK IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

• There is requirement of holistic approach to make student a responsible human apart from being qualified.

• To develop coping skills with the present days stress.

• To overcome stress recreation along with purposeful and meaningful message is necessary.

We will narrow our scope and concentrate to understand the single aspect i.e. how group work is being

done in school?

WHY IN SCHOOLS?

There are following merits of practicing group work in schools:-

• Students spend a lot of time in groups and are comfortable working in it.

• Students are familiar with the school environment and no special efforts are needed to make them participate in the group.

• Group work can be expected to improve the relationship between students and teachers and between students; it will improve the quality of learning.

BUT IT ALSO ACCOMPANIED BY

Challenges

• Shortage of time between students is the biggest obstacle in practicing group work.

• There is no separate place for practicing group work.

• The scarcity of staff filled with necessary skills and attitudes.

• If only children with problems will be forced to participate in the group work, there may be resistance as they may feel that they being highlighted among other children.

AIM OF GROUP WORKER

• Sensitizing the teacher to understand the common emotional problems of the student.

• Training teachers in basic counselling skills.

• Training teacher to identify and refer student who need professional mental health intervention.

• Training students in sex and sexuality.

• Imparting life skills education.• Promoting conducive environment and to

eliminate problems like ragging, teasing and bullying.

• Helping students to cope with academic stress.

• Training teachers to adopt non aggressive style of promoting discipline.

• Interacting with parents as a group and to educate them on the psychological needs of their children

PRINCIPLE TO BE FOLLOWED WHILE WORKING WITH CHILDREN

• To maintain confidentiality.

• A group worker should not be biased.

• Purpose and goal of a social worker should be described.

• Listen to the opinions of the group members whether you agree or disagree.

• Choose those activities which are useful and enjoyable for the members.

• Starts preparing for the termination process before a student start showing the sign of dependency on the group worker.

• Homogeneity in terms of age, sex, and class is a prerequisite for the success of group work in children.

Types of groups can be used

• Educational group.

• Recreational group.

• Personality development group.

• Treatment group.

GROUP DESIGN WHICH CAN BE USED

Wyre's suggested five kinds of group DESIGN:-

• CLUSTER GROUP.

• CLASSROOM GROUP.

• SPLINTER GROUP.

• TELESCOPIC GROUP.

• SOCIAL EDUCATIONAL GROUP.

POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES IN GROUP

• PLAY.

• PSYCHODRAMA

• DANCE.SONG ,EXERCISES.

ROLE OF A SOCIAL

WORKER

• MEDIATOR.

• TEACHER.

CONCLUSION

• GROUP WORK IS THE NEED OF A TIME WHERE THERE IS A LOTS OF STRESS.

• A TECHNIQUE OF SOCIALISATION WHICH HARNESS TEAMWORK AND FAITHFULLNESS.

• AVOIDS THE CONSEQUENCES OF ISLOLATION AND PROMOTES POSITIVE EFFECTS OF INTERDEPENDENCY.
