About the Presenter

My name is Isha Pacheco, a third year student at the University of the Southern Caribbean.

Currently studying Elementary Education at the said University, I hope to one day become not

only a teacher, but an individual with whom special teacher-student relationships can be

developed with all to aid in creating a comfortable learning environment for my students

within the near future.

Relationships.

• When we speak of relationships, communication is an important component within relationships. In so meaning, communication is the basis of our relationships. Having said that, a positive relationship initially entails positive communication.

Relationships• According to Henry(1996), “Building positive

relationships is not only vital for teachers students,

collegues and caretakers, it is entirely vital for the

success of an individual as a person”.

• When an individual develops a positive or positive

relationships, one especially tends to feel highly

comfortable interacting

Relationships.• With the mentioned having been stated, when positive

relationships are , established or even developed,

individuals with whom these relationships are developed:

• Develops a sense of comfort

• Develops a level of trust

• Encourages a boost in confident and self esteem

Importance of Developing Positive

Relationships.Essentially, positive relationships enables

individuals to collaborate or work together,

gives a sense of belonging, encourages

personal growth , a feeling of happiness,

support and a connection to and with others.

Importance of Developing Positive Relationships with students.

Importance of Developing Positive Relationships with

Students• According to Nakamura (2000), “Teachers play an important

role in the nurturing and learning of students throughout their

schooling experience or their school’s journey so to speak”.

• A positive student-teacher relationships helps students to

view the school as a home away from home, in so doing

enabling student to become highly comfortable within such

environment.

• Also, students may become inspired to meet the

school’s or classroom’s requirements both

academically and behavioral.

• Further, positive relationships with students encourages

high confidence levels, high levels of participation and

involvement within the classroom and entirely when

learning.

• Positive teacher-student relationships allows the

learner to feel appreciated, respected,

acknowledged and in some cases even admired.

• Many researchers stated that the student- teacher

relationship plays an important role in reducing

low academic achievement and delinquency.

• This is so since, having such a relationship

between both individuals, students often make

learning, academic success and great

achievement their priority, in so doing,

working hard given the fact that they value not

only their teachers but initially their learning.

Ways to develop positive relationships with students

• Get to know students

• Allow students to appropriately voice their opinions

• Provide timely and positive feedback

• Applaud/ congratulate students for excellence and efforts

• Avoid embarrassing students

• Believe in , encourage and have faith in students.

• Make mention of a student’s improved academic or behavioural performances

• Be Patient.

• Allot time to converse with students, to listen to their concerns, issues or any challenges faced with

Importance of positive relationships with parents

• Communication is essentially important to create or somewhat maintain

relationships. As a teacher, having that of positive relationships with

parents ,initially encourages and/or increases parental involvement within their

child’s learning, their progress and even within the classroom.

• Additionally, both the teacher and the parent will be able to collaborate

effectively to both understand and meet the needs of the child this which

seemingly establishes strong working relationships between both parents and

teachers and most importantly between teachers and students.

Ways to develop positive relationships with parents

• Provide timely positive

feedback about the child’s

progress

• Communicate as often as

possible in various forms.

• Invite parents to visit to

keep abreast of their

child’s or children’s

progress especially when

the child isnt performing

as they ought to.

Continued ways to develop positive relationships with parents

• Assign at least two days during the term for parent-

teacher conferences . On such day parents will be able

to:

• Voice their opinions or any concerns thereof.

• View student’s work, this being test scores,

assignments, any work of art created and the student’s

overall academic performance.

Continued Ways to develop positive relationships with parents.

• Email parents student’s scores on given weekly test .

However, for parents who may not have access to email or

any other forms of technology, phone calls will be made

so as to inform not only some parents but all parents.

• Collaborate with parents so as to enable the student to

maximize their full potentials and seek their best interests.

• Invite/Allow parents to participate within decision making.

• Provide/suggest if necessary, strategies that can be used to support the child and their learning at home.

Importance of Developing Relationships with teachers/colleagues.

Importance of developing positive relationships with teachers/colleagues

• Just as it is of great importance to develop positive relationships

with students and parents, so to is it of great importance to

develop positive relationships with teachers or colleagues.

• Developing positive relationships with other teachers may

allow cooperation or collaborations so to speak amongst

teachers in various departments this which will create a

collaborative atmosphere within the school’s environment.

Ways to develop positive relationships with teachers/ colleagues

• Be mindful that each individual is different and one

should not expect another to think in the manner in

which he/ she would. This means appreciate eachother,

eachother’s thoughts, opnions, feelings and even ways

in which they do things.

• Show appreciation entirely but also when helped or

when assistance is offered

• Accept constructive criticism

• Give constructive criticism when necessary in the

most appropriate manner.

• Avoid gossiping

• Share different ideas in teaching subjects.

• Cooperate, be a team player.

• Be supportive of other teachers and their work.

• Be appreciative of the different teaching styles

or strategies of others.

• Speak positively to and about others
