The River
• Thailand is a unique country
- It’s main interior
drainage system
is not shared with
other countries.
- The Chao Phraya drainage system consists of a number of rivers and canals (klongs) which both drain and connect the country.
- The rivers form a branch like pattern that flows from the northern border to the southward Gulf of Thailand known as Dendritic River Systems.
Watershed:
- Thailand’s watershed (at the Central Plains) covers over 35% of the whole country.
River Basin
What is the difference between a River Basin and a Watershed?
•River Basin: A large river where all water drains.
•Watershed: Smaller area of land that drains to a smaller stream, lake or wetland

River Delta
- are triangular in shape- Low flat areas- Formed by deposits from river; very rich in alluvial soils- Used for agriculture- Chao Phraya Delta is found between the Tha Chin and
Chao Phraya Rivers.
- Most famous:
Nile Delta River: formed by centuries of deposits at the mouth of Nile River (just out of the Mediterranean Sea.
Settlement Patterns
• Villages were established along the Chao Phraya river banks for survival and defense
• Cities grew spread out and expanded to follow the shape along the river.
