The country

Australia is an island, a continent and a country.

It’s the smallest continent and the biggest island in the world.

It’s between the Indian and the Pacific oceans.

Australia has an area of 7.618,000 square Km . It’s bigger than Europe.

It has a population about 23 millions people.

Most people live on the South and East coast because the interior of the country is very dry with many deserts.

It’s divided into 6 states: Western Australia South Australia Victoria New South Wales Queensland Tasmania

There are 2 more territories:- Northern territory (the Australian Outback).- Australian Capital Territory

The official language is English.

The coin is Australian dollar.

They drive on the left of the road.

The tallest mountain is Mount Kosciuszko. It’s near Canberra.

The longest river is the Murray. It’s in New South Wales.

The weather in Australia is warm and dry . The warmest months in Australia happen when we are having winter in Europe. Summer is from

December to February. Autumn is from March to

May. Winter is from June to

CassowaryThey are big birds.They can´t fly.They can run very fast.Their feathers are black.

Their neck is long and blue.

They´ve got long strong legs.

They have a helmet on their head.

They live in rainforests.They eat fruits and

seeds.

DingoA dingo is a wild dog. IT’s

about 50 cm tall and 120 cm long.

Dingoes live in deserts and forests.

They have yellowish hair, a small head, long legs and a long tail.

They eat other animals: they hunt reptiles, mammals and they even eat insects.

DugongsThey’re mammals. They live in groups.They live in the warm waters in the North of

Australia. They eat sea grass.They are about 3 metres long.They are grey or brown.Their enemies are : sharks, crocodiles, killer whales

and humans

Echidna Echidnas live in Australia. The echidna is a special kind of

mammal because it lays eggs. The egg hatches in the pouch. The baby echidna drinks milk

from its mother`s body and when its pines are big, it leaves the pouch

Echidnas live in forests. Echidnas have spines on its

back. The spines protect the animal

from enemies: Eagles, Dingoes and the Tasmanian Devil.

The echidna hasn`t got teeth. It's got a long sticky tongue to catch termites and ants.

Emu Emus live in Australia. They are birds but they can´t

fly. They have long strong legs

and they can run very fast. They are covered with fluffy

brown feathers. They haven´t got feathers on

their necks. They´ve got small wings. The emu have long legs, with

three large toes, each with a claw.

They are omnivorous. They eat: grass, fruits, flowers, seeds and insects.

Frilled neck lizard Frilled Lizard live in forests in

the north of Australia. They live in trees. They are covered with scales. They open their frill neck

when they are scared The frill is like an open

umbrella. They’ve got strong teeth. They hunt insects, ants,

spiders, small mammals and lizard during the day.

They like to be under the sun to warm is body.

Their enemies are eagles, owls, big lizards, snakes and dingoes.

 They are marsupials. Mother Kangaroos have a pouch where the babies are for about 4 months. Kangaroos have big strong

back legs with long feet. Their front legs are small

They’ve got a small head, big straight ears and a long strong tail

They eat grass and small plants Some kangaroos live in hot

areas and some live in grasslands

They drink water but they can go for long periods of time without drinking

They can’t walk but they can jump .

They can be brown, grey or red.

Koalas They are not bears. They

are marsupials. They have a pouch where the babies stay for a few months after they are born.

Koalas have soft, thick grey or brown fur. On his stomach it’s white.

They have a big nose, small eyes and big round ears. They haven’t got a tail.

They eat leaves of eucaliptus trees.

Kookaburra

KOOKABURRAS ARE BIRDS. THEY LIVE IN THE FOREST .THEY HAVE A SHORT, THICK BODY, A BIG HEAD AND A LONG BEAK . THEIR FEATHERS ARE BROWN, BLACK OR WHITE WITH BLUE PATCHES .

KOOKABURRAS EAT INSECTS , SMALL SNAKES , LIZARDS , FROGS AND FISH , AS WELL AS EARTHWORMS , CRAYFISH , RODENTS AND SMALL BIRDS .THEY LAY EGGS IN A HOLE IN A TREE .

Platypus Platypus are covered with brown

fur. They live in lakes in the East of

Australia. They dig long burrows in the bank of the lakes.

They eat worms and other small animals that live in the water.

They are special mammals, because they lay eggs.

HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION

Platypus live in freshwater rivers, creeks and lakes in Australia, Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania.

Tasmanian devil

Tasmanian Devils live in forests in Tasmania.

They are marsupialsThey eat birds, small

animals, reptiles or dead animals they find. Their strong jaws bite through bones.

They hunt at night.They have dark fur

with a white mark on the chest

 They are marsupials. Babies live in their mothers pouch for 6 months. Wombats dig dens with tunnels.

They are nocturnal: They eat plants, grass, roots and shrubs at night and they stay in their dens in daytime

They are about 1 metre long from nose to tail.

Their tail is very short (2 cm) Wombats live in forest and

woodlands on the areas along the East and South coast of Australia .

They’ve got grey or brown fur. They’ve got a big head, a large

nose and small ears.

The great barrier reefIt’s very popular for tourists for its warm clear waters. They like practising snorkelling and scuba-diving.

It’s about 2,000 Km long.There are lots of different animals: corals, whales, sea turtles, dugongs, sharks, dolphins, sea horses, and sea birds. There are lots of different fish, such as the Clown fish.

Its main enemies are:- The climate change- Polution- Fishing- Shipping accidents

Ayers rock

It’s a large rock formation in the centre of Australia.IT’s oval shaped. IT’s about 350 m high, 2 Km long and 1,5 Km wide.On the walls there are caves with aboriginal paintings.

It’s sacred to the aboriginal people.IT’s multicoloured. At sunset nad dawn it’s red, during the day it’s brown.There are bats, kangaroos and there are trees and wild flowers.

Sydney Opera House

It’s the symbol of Sydney. The roofs look like white ship sails or shells.

There are many cultural activities: opera, ballet, drama, music and dancing.

It contains a concert hall, theatres, cinemas, cafes and restaurants.

The Harbour Bridge

It’s in Sydney, near the Opera House.

IT’s made of steel. IT’s about 80 years old.

You can climb to the top of the bridge. There are 200 steps.

Sports Australia's national sport is

Cricket. Australia won the Cricket World Cup in 1999 and 2003.

Another favorite sport in Australia is Australian Football. It is a little bit like soccer and rugby.

Rugby and soccer are also very popular

Surf is very popular for young people. There are great waves. The weather is great and the sea temperature is warm
