The Problem…Living in the dark, in a rural and isolated area of the Peruvian Andes, the community of El Alumbre relies upon candles, kerosene and dry batteries to meet all of their energy needs.

The Practical ActionHigh wind speeds in El Alumbre provide the perfect conditions for 100w wind turbines to be installed outside 21 of the village homes.

The whole community participated to install the generator and received maintenance training.

The energy converted from wind power is shared between families and the village school

The community now has access to clean, safe, renewable energy.The energy can be used to power lights, use radios to communicate with other villages and the school now has access to 3 computers.
