CONSERVATION OF FOREST

2

WHAT IS FOREST CONSERVATION ?Forest conservation is the practice of planning and maintaining forested areas for the benefit and sustainability of future generations. Forest conservations involves the upkeep of the natural resources within a forest that are beneficial to both humans and the ecosystem. Forest conservation acts to maintain, plan, and improve forested areas. Forest provide wildlife with a suitable habitat for living along with filtering groundwater and preventing runoff.

3

Our Earth has been constantly trying to cope with the way in which human beings use natural resources, clear forest lands, cut trees and contaminate the air, land , and water. Industrial revolution, population bursts, and pollution create permanent damage to the Earth, and the result is global warming and climate change. In such situations, something that can help extend the life of the planet and its living organisms is the increase of natural resources and decrease of exploitation of these resources. By planting trees and creating forests, many of the commercial needs of human beings are fulfilled, while not destroying what is left of the planet. Forest conservation is, therefore a practice that has been propagated by government and non-government agencies of many countries as a way to stop over exploitation of nature. WHY FOREST CONSERVATION IS NECESSSARY TODAY ?

4

ADVANTAGES OF FOREST CONSERVATION Forest conservation support life on Earth. It maintains quality of water and air, the basic essentials of existence of life.Stability in soil is possible by trees, enables the land based plants and animals to live. From their biodiversity grows wealth in the form of food, medicines, essential for human health,It acts as Carbon sinks absorbing Carbon-di oxide and keeps global warming at body.Forests influence climate and educe extremes of temperature. They conserve soil and regulate moisture and stream flow.

5

Imagine a world without trees. An estimated 18 million acres of forests are destroyed each year. Half of the worlds forest has been cleared. Deforestation contributes 12 to 17% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually. Trees absorb greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide. They produce the oxygen we breathe. Forests are the habitats of millions of species. It may seem like there is nothing you can do as an individual to stop the factors that are depleting our natural resources. But you can do something. If every person contributed to the conservation of our natural resources and reducing their CO2 emissions footprint, we can make a difference.Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by buying energy efficient appliances. , Cycle or walk or use public transportation whenever possible. Save trees by going paperless or by using only recycled products, Plant a tree wherever you can, Participate in tree conservation projects. , Conserve Electricity , Stop polluting the ocean. , Harvest rainwater when you can. You can use it for cleaning or watering your plantsForests

People began life on this planet as forest dwellers. They were food gatherers and depended on the forest for all their needs: food, clothing, and shelter. They gradually became food growers, clearing a small patch in the forest to grow food. But they continued to depend on forests to meet a lot of their needs. Evens today people depend on the forest for many things like : Uses of forests

1. Prevention and control of soil erosion : Forests play a significant role in the prevention and control of soil erosion by water and wind. The destruction of forest cover leads to increased runoff of rain water and its diminished seepage and storage in soil. The structure of the soil suffers, runoff increases and loosens the soil which is carried away to other regions. The fertility of the soil is thus lost, and it becomes barren and unproductive. 2. Flood Control : Roots of the trees absorb much of the rain water and use it slowly during the dry season. Thus they regulate the flow of water and help in controlling the floods. The forest cover acts as a rain-holder and a rain banker.

Forests also helps in

3. Checks on spread of deserts : Sand particles are blown away by strong winds in the deserts and are carried over long distances, thus resulting in the spread of deserts. The roots of trees and plants bind the sand particles and do not permit their easy transportation by wind. 4. Increase of soil fertility : The fallen leaves of trees add humus to soil after their decomposition. Thus forests help in increasing the fertility of soil.5. Effect on Climate : Forests have a far reaching effect on climate. They ameliorate the extremes of climate by reducing the heat in summer and cold in winter. They also influence the amount of rainfall by lowering the temperature of moisture laden winds and increase the relative humidity of the air through the process of transpiration. They reduce the surface velocity of winds and retard the process of evaporation.

Effects due to depletion of forestsClimate imbalance Deforestation also affects the climate in more than one ways. Trees release water vapour in the air, which is compromised on with the lack of trees. Trees also provide the required shade that keeps the soil moist. This lead to imbalance in the atmospheric temperature .Increase in global warming - Trees play a major role in controlling global warming . The trees utilize the green house gas, restoring the balance in the atmosphere. With constant deforestation the ratio of green house gases in the atmosphere has increased, adding to our global warming woes.

11

Soil Erosion:Also due to the shade of trees the soil remains moist. With the clearance of tree cover, the soil is directly exposed to the sun, making it dry. Floods :When it rains, trees absorb and store large amount of water with the help of their roots. When they are cut down, the flow of water is disrupted and leads to floods in some areas and droughts in other. Wildlife Extinction :Due to massive felling down of trees, various species of animals are lost. They lose their habitat and forced to move to new location. Some of them are even pushed to extinction. Our world has lost so many species of plants and animals in last couple of decades.

. With the world growing at a pace hard to match, the increasing need for space is turning out to be an area of concern. With desperate need for land for agricultural, industrial and most importantly urban needs to contain cities and theirgrowing population, a direct action that we have come to recognize as Deforestation occurs. Deforestation in simple term means the felling and clearing of forest cover or tree plantations in order to accommodate agricultural, industrial or urban use Over the last century the forest cover around the globe has been greatly compromised, leaving the green cover down to an all time low of about 30 per cent. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), an estimated 18 million acres (7.3 million hectares) of forest are lost each year. Deforestation can also be seen as removal of forests leading to several imbalances ecologically and environmentally. What makes deforestation alarming is the immediate and long term effects it is bound to inflict if continued at the current pace. Some predictions state that therainforestsof the world will be destroyed completely if deforestation continues at its current pace.

Deforestation: Compromises of a Growing World

13

Causes of deforestation1. Agricultural Activities:As earlier mentioned in the overview, agricultural activities are one of the major factors affecting deforestation. Due to overgrowing demand for food products, huge amount of tress are fell down to grow crops and for cattle gazing.

2. Logging:Apart from this, wood based industries like paper, match-sticks, furniture etc. also need a substantial amount of wood supply. Wood is used as fuel both directly and indirectly, therefore trees are chopped for supplies.

3. Urbanization:Further on order to gain access to these forests, the construction of roads are undertaken; here again trees are chopped to create roads. Overpopulation too directly affects forest covers, as with the expansion of cities more land is needed to establish housing and settlements. Therefore forest land is reclaimed.

14

5. Mining:Oil andcoal miningrequire considerable amount of forest land. Apart from this, roads and highways have to be built to make way for trucks and other equipment. The waste that comes out from miningpollutes the environmentand affects the nearby species.

6. Forest Fires:Another example would be forest blazes; Hundreds of trees are lost each year due to forest fires in various portions of the world. This happens due to extreme warm summers and milder winters. Fires, whether causes by man or nature results in huge loss of forest cover.

15

1. The best solution to deforestation is tocurb the felling of trees,by employing a series of rules and laws to govern it. Deforestation in the current scenario may have reduced however it would be too early to assume. The money-churner that forest resources can be, is tempting enough for deforestation to continue.2.Clear cutting of forests must be banned. This will curb total depletion of the forest cover. It is a practical solution and is very feasible.3. Land skinned of its tree cover for urban settlements should be urged to plant trees in the vicinity and replace the cut trees. Also thecutting must be replaced by planting young trees to replace the older ones that were cut. Trees are being planted under several initiatives every year, but they still dont match the numbers of the ones weve already lost.Solution to deforestation
