So What is the Hammer Throw all about?

• The hammer throw is metal ball with a swivel, which the ball is attached to a wire with a handle.

• The hammer is thrown with two hands.

• The athlete starts his movements at the back of the circle

• The athlete starts the throw winding the implement over head. Then a number of progressive heal to toe turn are done, anywhere from 1 to 4 turns.

• The hammer will have a circular orbit and then the hammer is released high over one’s shoulder.

• The implement is released at the front of the circle.

Background Info

The hammer throw is an event in the sport of track and field, primarily a collegiate and an Olympic sport. Rhode Island is the only state that lets high school athletes participate in the event. This is because of the lack of knowledge and the dangers of the event.

The hammer throw is a much more popular event in other countries, especially in Europe

• Men's Hammer- 16lbs (7.257 kg), collegiate, Olympic

• Length- 3 feet 11 and ¾ in (121.5 cm)

• Women's Hammer- 8.82lbs ( 4kg), collegiate, Olympic

• Length- 3 feet 11 in (119.5 cm)

Circle and Sector

The hammer is thrown in a circle

Hammer throw circle is 7 feet 0 inch (2.134 m) in diameter.

The implement is released into lined boundaries called a sector

Throwing sector is a 40-degree angle

Rules continued

The athlete may enter the circle from anywhere

The implement or athlete my not touch the top or outside of the circle during or after the implement is released

The athlete must exit the back of the circle after the implement is released

If the athlete breaks these rules, then the throw is considered a foul and it is not measured.

The athlete with the farthest throw at the end of competition wins

Tips and advice

Vital factors in the throw are speed of the ball and angle of release.

Balance is key

Practice multiple turns

Weightlifting will help add distance, especially leg and core strength exercises
