Portfolio Assesment
What is a portfolio?
• “A purposeful collection of students work that exhibits the student’s efforts, progress and achievements in one area.” (Paulson, Mayer 1991)
• A portfolio is a systematic collection of one’s work.
Purpose of portfolio
1. Documentation of student progress2. Showcasing student accomplishments3. Evaluation of student
Why use Portfolio?
• Through the process students grow in: • Creativity and Innovation• Critical Thinking and Problem Solving• Communication and Collaboration
Why are Portfolios useful?
• Puts ownership of learning back in hands of student
• Allows student to see what they are great at and what still needs work
Essential elements of portfolio 1. Entries – both core (required) and optional
(uniqueness of student)2. Dates of all entries – to facilitate proof of growth over time3. Drafts of oral and written products and revised versions4. Reflections a. What did I learn from it? b. What did I do well? c. Why did I choose this item? d. What do I want to improve in the item? e. How do I feel about my performance? f. What were the problems areas?
How are portfolios assessed?
• Rubrics are used by students to self-evaluate
OTHER METHODS OF EVALUATION:
• Peer evaluations• Teacher-student conferences• Parent-teacher conferences
Pros• Meets individual needs, interests and abilities of the student
• Great way to document and evaluate growth
• Self-evaluation and personal ownership for students
Cons• Difficult to evaluate• It takes “loads of time” to be carried out properly
