ABOUT US: PORTAGE COLLEGE PUBLIC LEGAL EDUCATION PROGRAMThe Portage College Public Legal Education Program is a public service initiative offered in partnership with the Alberta Law Foundation. The program offers learning opportunities to individuals, families, and communities throughout northeastern Alberta through the provision of information, resources, and education on a variety of legal topics. Some areas of interest might include:

What makes us unique?The Portage College PLE Program is in a unique position, being the only rural-based PLE program in Alberta. In order to deliver effective and valuable community-based programming, PLE must collaborate and form partnerships with many communities and organizations across our service region to carry out our program goals and objectives.

Youth Criminal Defence Office (Legal Aid)Immediate legal advice for youth under arrest – 24 hours, seven days a week. Between the hours of 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the call will be forwarded to a call centre answering service. The call answering service will contact the on-call lawyer.

Dial-a-Law provides the general public with basic information about the law and the legal system. There are over 170 recorded topics of the law for people to access 24 hours a day. There is no other service of this nature in the province.
Lawyer Referral ServiceThe Lawyer Referral Service is a program operated by the Law Society of Alberta to assist people in finding a lawyer who will provide them with the legal services they require. It is an information service and is not connected with Legal Aid – nor does it provide any form of financially subsidized legal service. A member of the public may phone toll-free from anywhere in Alberta by dialling:

ST. PAUL MENTAL HEALTH DIVERSION SERVICE
The Provincial Diversion Program helps ensure that, whenever possible, adults and adolescents with a mental illness who commit minor, low-risk offenses and come into conflict with the law receive appropriate care, support and treatment in the community rather than in the criminal justice system. If eligible for Diversion Services, and with consent, the individual receives community-based care and treatment that focuses on the specific mental health or life skills issues that may have contributed to the commission of the offense.

NATIVE COUNSELLING SERVICES OF ALBERTA (NCSA)
In its 40 plus years of existence, NCSA’s correctional and restorative justice-related programs and services ranging from gang prevention and addictions programs to legal education and health and wellness campaigns. However, it is their original mandate of helping Aboriginal people navigate the court system with the help of Aboriginal courtworkers that remains the driving force behind NCSA.
NCSA Courtworker Services are status-blind and free of charge, and include in-court client support, provision of information to the court on available community resources, explaining court procedures to the accused in plain language, translation services for those who require them, entering pleas, speaking to sentence, and adjournment, as well as the provision of emotional support to clients throughout the court process.

FAMILY JUSTICE SERVICESFamily Justice Services are a group of programs and services offered by Alberta Justice in collaboration with the courts of Alberta. Family Justice Services works directly with individuals and also with the judges of the Alberta Provincial Court and Court of Queen’s Bench to help people get appropriate solutions for their family law issues. Family Court Counsellors provide services, at no cost, to families who are involved in parenting disputes and are living separate and apart. BEARPAW LEGAL EDUCATION CENTRE
The BearPaw Legal Education & Resource Centre (BearPaw Education) is a program offered by Native Counselling Services of Alberta and funded by the Alberta Law Foundation aimed at helping Aboriginal people navigate the legal system and gain awareness of their legal rights. The BearPaw Education provides public legal education and information specifically designed by and for Aboriginal people, focusing on areas of the law that are of special significance to Aboriginal people. THE MULTI-AGENCY PARTNERSHIP ON JUSTICE (MAP ON JUSTICE)
MAP on Justice was created to provide agency support to vulnerable individuals involved in the Alberta Justice legal system. Our vision is:
“MAP on Justice is effectively meeting the legal needs of the most vulnerable population”.The MAP on Justice partnership is comprised of representatives from collaborative agencies interested in supporting the vision of MAP through the creation of effective and impactful network of agency support – on the ground – directly to the people most in need. The MAP and its various committees is creating a precedent-setting model of collaboration and accountability. This organizational model represents a self-sustaining solution to the present problems of:
• A clogged legal system resulting in frustrating delays ;• Individuals not able to take utmost advantage of their legal rights; and • Stress among service agencies staff feeling they are working alone to tackle almost insurmountable challenges.
