What makes a good magazine?

To answer this question, I carried out a number of questionnaires and focus groups which is

why my magazine will be successful.

I found that….

Colour

Content

Layout

% OF IMPORTANCE

Page 5: Pop magazine pitch

How will I achieve this?

For colour, I will make sure that the colour scheme is very bright (pinks, yellows). Not only

will this meet the needs of the target audience but it will also give the brand identity of a

friendly, positive company which is what we are trying to achieve.

For content, I’ve carefully gone through all of the answers to the questionnaire so now

know what our target audience wants. They want interviews, stories, competitions, gossip

and lot’s of images so I’m making sure that 90% of my magazine contains this.

For layout, I’m making sure I stay conventional as this has shown to be very successful in

the past, proved by major pop magazine ‘Top of the Pops’

What will the front cover look like?

There will be bright colours (mainly pink and yellow)

Lot’s of visual elements such as different shapes

Cluttered layout

Lot’s of images of the featured artists

Page 7: Pop magazine pitch

What will make this page successful?

The colour scheme will be successful as pink and yellow are not only feminine but are also

bright so will stand out on a shelf, attracting more readers.

The range of shapes and sizes will give the magazine cover a cluttered layout which is

conventional for pop magazines. Also, it will show the wide range of content we include

as many images will also be on the cover.

The main, central image will be of a current and very, well known artist. This will make the

magazine relevant and will attract the target audience.

What will the contents page look like?

Continuous colour scheme, creating a house style

3 separate columns

Cluttered central column with featured artists

Hearts to create a fun page

Page 9: Pop magazine pitch

What will make this page successful?

The house style will be successful because as mentioned before, the colours are feminine

which is good as the primary target audience is female. Also, by having a house style, the

magazine looks more professional.

There will be three separate columns as rule of thirds is a very conventional layout,

especially for contents pages. This will be successful as the page will be clear and easy to

navigate.

What will the double-page spread look

like?

Blue colour scheme to match

featured artist

4 columns of text

the left page

Main page heading across both

pages

Page 11: Pop magazine pitch

What will make this page successful?

The blue colour scheme to match the featured artist will be successful as it will be relevant

to not only the headline but also the male artist which the main image will be of.

4 columns of text will be successful as it is unconventional as usually, the main image takes

up one whole side. However, being different will make the magazine more interesting and

stand out.
