Plant and Animal Cells
What are their organelles and how do they function?
Cell Membrane
• Shape of the cell
• Lets helpful things in the cell but keeps harmful things out
• Found in plant and animal cells
Cell Wall
• Additional layer that protects and gives the cell its shape
• Outside cell membrane
• Only found in plant cells
Cytoplasm
• Protects all other organelles in a cell
• Gel like substance
• Allows needed movement inside the cell
• Found in both plant and animal cells
Nucleus
• The “brain” and powerhouse of the cell
• Controls all activity
• Contains DNA of the cell
• Found in both types of cells
Chloroplasts
• Specialize in photosynthesis
• Convert sunlight to energy
• Only found in plant cells
Vacuole• Main function is structural support
• Other functions include storage and waste disposal
• Found in both plant and animal cells
• Vacuole in plant cells are significantly larger than in animal cells
Mitochondria
• Turn food into energy that the rest of the cell uses
• Found in both types of cells
Endoplasmic Reticulum
Rough• Covered in ribosomes• Modifies proteins into finished three dimensional
shapes that completes their structureSmooth• No ribosomes• Involved in the creation of lipids that make up
membranes in other organelles.
Ribosomes
• Make proteins thatare needed for manycell activities
• Found on the Rough E.R.
• Found in plant and animal cells
Lysosomes
• “Clean up crew”
• Breaks down largerfood molecules
• Get rid of unwanted things in the cell
• Found in animal and plant cells
Golgi Complex
• Modify proteins
• Package and export proteinsoutside of the cell
