Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: I will be able to go through out the project not needing any money as everything I will be needing I have access to through college having it already such as software, paper, pencils, computers etc. I will also not be using anything extra to make my book which means the cost will stay at 0. Available resources: i have lots of resources available to me. The most useful resources I have access to is the computers and scanners within college which allow me to create the book. We we are also given software such as Photoshop which is usually a monthly payment but college give it for free as a students. I also have access to cameras and the items needed to use the cameras such as SD Cards, lenses. Even though I may not use the camera to create my book I have the option.

Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:

There are lots of things to consider in this project.

Quantity: I would make the book a mass market within the 10’s of thousands. This is because I feel the take on which I took on jack and the beanstalk works really well and would do well within our young generation as is keeps to the original story within a modern look keeping the kids interested which I think would make the book sell well.

Audience and Target Market: I did not intend in focusing the book to a specific gender as I feel it can be read and enjoyed by both female and male. The book is suitable for children in the age of 3-6. This is because I have kept in keeping the pages to a maximum amount of picture with a little bit of text making it is easy to read and more to follow and understand by looking at the pictures. Because I have gone for a simple cartoon look on the book and is low detailed makes the book easier to produce and less time to make which makes the book lower in prices so it is suitable for all classes as it can be useful and enjoyed by all kids at a reasonable price.

Quality Factors: I need to make sure that I work hard throughout making and designing the pages so that they are all good and don’t look different between them (keep a good constant flow within the work). I will be also researching similar stories and similar designs to make sure I aren’t stuck when it comes to making it so that I don’t waste time having to think up things on the spot. I will also make sure I have a strong plan to follow so that I don’t have doubts on what I am wanting to do half way through production.

Codes of Practice: The Publisher’s Code of Practice is a legal document covering how an author interacts with the publishers and vice versa. Section 2 states “the contract should be clear about ownership of the copyright”. This means any of the author’s work is theirs and theirs only, no one else can take it as their own. Section 6 states “the publisher must handle manuscript keep the author informed of progress.” The publisher must be made aware of any activity happening with the author’s scripts and how much progress the author is making.

Regulation: : i have looked at the Obscene Publications Act 1959 and the Equality Act 2010. I have looked as there regulations and will make sure that there is no discrimination within the book. As it is a children’s book it is hard to create problems under this act as the book does not feature adult humour which is where problems are more often an issue with discrimination and racism.

Copyright: As I have chosen to do Jack & The Beanstalk for my story I have less worries for copyright. This is because the first story written about this was in the 1700’s. this means the copyright expired so that I am able to use this story without the worry that I will get copyrighted for using it. I am also designing my book purely with imagination and no use of other people’s work online. This means as I have created everything by scratch I cannot be copyrighted as I have not used anyone else’s work to create my story of Jack & The Beanstalk.

Ethical Issues: i am not going to have ethical issues within my book. This is because my book consists in a typical city within England and then in space. This means I won’t have any problems as I know how to make my book look like it should and not portray anything it shouldn’t as I live in England and is based within there. Secondly as it is in space this can be completely random and not be ethically wrong as it cannot offend anyone as it does not take place on earth.

Resources:A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.

If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Resource:Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it?

computer  yes Go into college and log onto the computer.

Scanner  yes Use my college ID card to log on then scan the work I need onto it.

Paper, Pens, Pencils  yes  Ask my teacher for them.

Editing software (Photoshop)  yes  Open up the software via the computer.

Production Schedule:Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

I will start by laying out my page so that I know where everything will locate on the page. This will be space for the text and by importing the text so that I know where it will go and how to make the pictures work with the text. I will then start on the first background. This will be inside Jacks house in the kitchen. I will work my way from the back by making the back wall which will have a window showing into the garden. I will then work on the things to show they are in a kitchen such as an oven fridge etc. I will then start on the characters and how they should be positioned and looked for that page. I will then make sure I have filled the page making sure nothing has been left out and add any further detail to refine it. I will then move onto my next page by once again planning where everything will go. After planning the next page, I will then start on the next background. The next background is in a market. I will start by creating the market stands. After the background is completed I will then start in implementing the characters. I will carry on working with the characters and making sure there is enough detail within the background making sure there is not empty boring spaces. (filling the page).  After completing the last page, I will then move onto my next page which will be my third. For this I will once again start on planning the page. I will then start to work on the next background which will be back at Jacks house but this time the perspective will be much further so will be from the outside of the house showing his house and garden. After finishing the background, I will then start on the characters of this page. I will then move onto my next page which will not need as much planning as it will use the previous background but with a giant beanstalk now in the garden which will be the first thing I add to the page. As that wont take long I will then move onto putting jack within the page. As the last page only needed slight tweaks such as changing the text it will take a lot shorter amount of time as the last. This means I will be moving onto my next page already which will start with planning how the page will be laid out.  I will then start on the next background which will now be on the new planet which I had already made as my test page which can be used and tweaked to save time. I will then move onto my next page which will use the same background as the last but with the characters being changed and some tweaks on the background so it is not identical to the last. I will then take the beginning of this session to go over my previous pages making sure everything is there which I need and if there is anything I can add to improve. I will then move onto my next page by planning how the page will be laid out. I will then work on my next background which will be in a spaceship so a lot closer view like the first background in the kitchen.  I will carry on with the background as it is a new one which will take some time to make.  I will then add in the characters but as a new character will be needed (alien women) it will take a little longer again as I will need to make her from scratch unlike my other characters where I have made before to help. I will then move onto my last page which will once again use a previous

background so will only need to add in the characters of Jack, Jacks Mum and Alien women. I will also have to make a police officer character to make the text link more with the pictures.

Health and safety:Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.

Page 7: Planning booklet

Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening.

Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.

Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?

Brightness can be too high.

You can prevent this by turning down the brightness using the function keys so that you are not staring into a really bright screen.

Sitting too close to the screen.

Need to make sure that you are sat far enough away from the screen so your eyes are not straining and if you need to look closely at something for example on photoshop. You need to use the zoom tools so that you aren’t staring a cm away from the screen.

Not having breaks away from the pc.

Need to make sure to have at least a 10 minute break between sessions so that eyes can have rest and aren’t sat for too long.

Not having charger if using laptop.

As I am using my own laptop I will need to make sure to bring my charger as using photoshop and having many tabs open can use lots of battery and need to make sure its lasts the full time I am using it.
