Flat plan for Rock sound May 2011

• I really like rock sounds issues as they give away fantastic free gifts which is what I love about them. With this issue I got 3 free cds, two of them had 15 tracks on and the other one was 5 tracks from a new album. I also got a free cd from signing up. Which I'm happy about. I also got some free posters. As from this I can incorporate into my music magazine as free music seems to be a winner :) which is a great thing as then this will help the music industry. As by giving one free track from 15 different bands and artists, and the reader had never heard of this band before and likes what they hear, they will hopefully go out and buy their albums?

• I used a friends magazine for this as I was going to use metal hammer but I wanted to see what an indie magazine consisted of. And from looking through it the layout of everything is considerably different to metal magazines. What with the layout and the people featured in this magazine has nothing to really to-do With my genre. But it thought that I could look into other genres as I can compare and get some more ideas so that I know what I should and shouldn't include in a metal magazine as I know I shouldn't have bands like JLS or I shouldn't have prizes for girly girl things.

Location recce 1I have decided to use this for my front cover location in hope tat if it rains, my model wont get wet if it decides to rain. This will be taken at The Henley college, which will behind the hall. I am hoping to get5-12 images from this shoot to show different shot types i.e. close ups, long shot etcThings for me to look out for are:- •It smells a lot like gas, so no lighting up a cigarette ( I don't smoke never have done ) •Move any objects which don't need to be in the shot i.e. the pole on the floor, any sand which is in the way•And too have fun

Page 10: Planning

Location recce This is the pole that I was on about I am going to move it out of the shot when I do my photo shoot so that I don't have any unnecessary clutter ruining the shot.

I am hoping to get some of Molly sat down on the step so that I can get really close to her face and she will look more natural

Page 11: Planning

Location recce 3 This maybe used for my shoot I am unsure, but I am hoping to achieve some brilliant against a wall shots from this shoot in order to use for my double page spread or contents page. The colours of the brick, when edited, will look amazing and bright so will give Molly a cool but good edge in the pictures. safety things to look out for:-•There are several tree stumps here so I have to be careful when taking the pictures•Any twigs or debris or anything just on the floor as its very slippery and muddy there.

Page 12: Planning

Location recce 4 This will be used for my double page spread ( as well as the other locations) as I wanted a guy and a girl I have decided to use a bedroom for this shoot so I can get a wide range of images. Also the reader can relate to the model by the posters and how he is taken in the bedroom. Safety things to look out for:-• watch out for nay guitar cables and they are so easy to trip over and hurt your self

Page 13: Planning

Other images I am going to use

• As I have been to many gigs in the past I have decided to use the best images that I have taken to be used in my magazine.

• I am going to use images from:-• An overkill gig• As I lay dying gig• Owlcity• And maybe some other ones that I have been to as well. • By doing this I am relating to the target audience as they

live for going to gigs, and some of them may of been at the gigs that I have taken the images of.

Page 14: Planning

Organization of props and costumes I want my model to wear some black military boots so she will have a rock chick but subtle look about her self. I am hoping she does where them on the day as it will make the look more cool.

I have planned for Molly to wear a leopard print coat, so it adds class to her and makes her look like a new person, as it fits in with my story line.

A black scarf will add to the look so I want her to wear a big chunky black scarf to make her look girls with an edge of rock chick in her.

I hope when we do my shoot she will be wearing what I’ve told her to wear as it will help me to stay on track with my planning and keep it all the same.

Page 15: Planning

Organisation f props and costume

I want josh to be playing a guitar as it fits in well with the type of audience that I'm appealing to. Which I think is good thing to do as it shows that I'm taking my readers interests into consideration. Also I could have a competition from this article i.e. your best pose with a guitar and the winner gets to feature in our magazine ?

I’ve chosen then iron maiden top as they have been around for ages! And it shows he is a loyal fan if he is wearing the latest top from an old band.

I have chosen blue jeans as they fit in well and its something different to what they normally wear i.e. combats so it shows that I'm thinking of other target audiences as well not just metal heads .

Page 18: Planning

• I thought for my shoots I want to capture that I would draw them on the computer as then it can show I have experimented more with the computers. I do think that these shots will be easy to capture as I haven’t captured anything hard. I do think that I will be capturing more as I love photography. If I do capture more I will show them so it shows I have thought of everything and captured as many different shots as possible. Which is a good thing to-do.

• I have chosen

• METAL ENTITY

I have chosen this name as it reminds and relates to metal music and fans can quickly find it and realise its for metal lovers. Which is a good thing to-do as if I put something like witch worshipers, people might think its for pagans or something along those lines. Also is bold, strong and different to anything else on the market. As its easy to distinguish when on the shelf. Which I think is a good thing to do as if I had something like feral woods then they may think its like “gardeners world” which is way off from what I'm trying to achieve

Page 21: Planning

What text to use for my front cover

• I am going to use da-font in order for me to get some amazing fonts for my metal magazine. I am hoping I will find a couple of fonts on there that I like. As the ones on the computer are okay, but they aren’t what I'm looking for. But if I cant use the fonts I have chosen in the next slides, then I will use a metal like font on there as they use the same ones as Photoshop. Which is a good thing so then I can switch between the two. I do hope that I can use the fonts below as some of them are great and totally different to many mastheads on magazines.

Page 22: Planning
Page 23: Planning

From these fonts I do think that some of them are a bit too hard too read i.e.:

As I do like them but when converted into metal entity, it becomes hard to read so it wouldn't be a very good idea to use them. But the rest I do think would be good to use and hopefully I can pick one as I do like all of them. Hopefully I can change the colours of them as well as I want it to be bold, eye catching and metal like so that metal fans will be proud to be buying my magazine not embarrassed to be stood near it.

Page 24: Planning

Font I have chosen to use

I chosen the band Megadeth’s font as I think its clear, bold and easy to read and its easy to distinguish from a distance as well. I will be keeping it in black as I think it looks better in this colour rather than having it in red or blue or grey. I like how the M curves and some of the other letters follow this as well which I think makes it different to lots of other fonts available

I also think that this is a very strong font to use as its basic but not too basic so its got some individuality, but it still looks like other magazine front cover titles

Page 25: Planning

Colour scheme for all pages Of course I wont be using all of these colours on every page, that would be far too much. But I have decided to use these through out the 80 paged magazine. Which I think is a good thing too do as then I have a wide range of colours and its not always going to look dark and depressing on some pages.

Page 26: Planning

Mode of address • Metal Entity will be written in an informal style so it will be able to

relate to my readers more than if I had chosen to use formal, which would of been a lot harder for me to achieve. When I am writing articles and designing the front cover, I want to be able to address the audience so that they can relate to it and feel at ease when reading it. Also my target audience is aged 15-24 so they tend to use more of a informal style of language than use a formal style in their writing. As at that age teens use words like WTF, omg, lol, etc. They also change simple words like ok into okay or you into yhoo, yu, or u ( well there's many more ways of saying it) but I think that if I stick to the basic slag i.e. omg as I'm not targeting so called “chav” ( RnB lovers) and it will feel more targeted at them than if I used formal words like obviously I would use obs as its a shorter abbreviation of the longer word. It will sound more up-to date and fresh?

Page 27: Planning

February and march and April, what too do and when

1st-7th plan my front cover what am I expecting to do on it, plan my shoot and find my models for it , email them and get the screen prints. Also decide on who I will be targeting and what the appropriate approach would be for this.

15th-21st draw out my drafts for my media magazine i.e. for the front cover, contents and double page spread , do my planning work for my front cover

22nd-28th planning for my contents draw it out and decide what too do for my contents and how I am going to place the images and what images I'm going to use.

My own flat planning for my magazine

Page 29: Planning

This is the 1st page of my flat plan and so far I think that its going well as I have lots of interviews, adverts, posters and info about stars I do think that this will look good when I create it. As my scanner wasn't working I had to take two pictures of this ( reason for it looks bent in the middle) I decided to write it out as I find it hard to visualise things on the computer and find it a lot easier to write things out for plans than on the computer. But it does differ. But I am pleased with how this turned. Pages 38-45 is questions/ a poll of the year :) so for instants one could best unsigned act? And you write in or go online and say which one you think is the best and the bands or artist with the most votes wins that question for 2011. as recently I entered a Metal Hammer poll and I thought it would be a good thing to do. I know Kerrang! Does this and I have entered in the past for that as well.

Page One of Two

Page 30: Planning

I have again taken two pictures of this as my scanner isn't working and that's the reason for the curve in the middle. Which I know does ruin it slightly but I didn't want to redo it again as I find it takes a bit too long to-do. But I am pleased with the outcome of this. I decided to follow metal conventions and have the information about gigs at the end as it makes it easy for gig lovers to just turn to the back pages and what they want is there instead of me putting it in the middle which would most likely annoy gig lovers? Maybe? But I thought that I would put Amie’s interview on the 2nd half of the flat plan as I have to admit when I'm flicking through a magazine I flick through the 1st 10 pages read them and put it down. I didn't want to give everything away in the 1 st half of this issue so I think I have placed everything well and evenly through out the 116 pages of my magazine

Page 31: Planning

1st draft of front cover I know this isn't the best of drawings but I'm not here to draw a A grade piece this was a quick sketch and the eye went wrong ( due to not having a rubber, a fail I know) but as its just a draft I didn't really care what the next lot of drawing look like. This is going to be my main image on the front cover. I did have a few other ideas planned but I think that a close up of Amie’s face will really set the tone and scene of what the front cover is about. As the metal world hates her at the moment for everything that she has done and lives she has ruined, but in the interview for Metal Entity, she explains as much as she can for everyone to read and for them to change their minds. But everyone knows its impossible to get everyone too like you- as that would be weird. But Metal Entity gives even the bad stars a chance to make a change for them selves and get the metal fans too not like or love, but understand everything that they did and the reasons why everything happened. It can also be a chance for them think everything over and have a one chance one shot at making fans listen to them?

Page 32: Planning

This is the mast head for the magazine I am going to create as I tried to do a mock up to see what it would look like and the font looked to squished with Metal Entity written out. But with the word Metal inside Entity, creates something new and fresh. Yes I know it looks a lot like metal hammer, but its totally different to theirs as they change there's from month to month. But when they 1st started out they did have the word metal on top of hammer ( in the examples below) but as times gone on they have changed it to Metal being inside Hammer which looks a lot more professional in my opinion. I'm planning to have Entity in a block style font with a white shadow- having at the same word but in white behind it giving the allusion of a shadow. As I want to as I want it my magazine too look professional and not fake like some people have created in the past.

Entity Entity Example

Page 33: Planning

• This is going to be in a red colour as it stands out great against black and white photos which I think will look great. Well as you can see it does look good against it. I am hoping that my image will be slightly lighter than the one I have taken of Google just to show what it will look like against it. I will be having a standard font like Ariel inside it and the 100 will be written white so it stands out even more as shapes and weird things on front covers grabs the readers attention more than if it was written out. And greatest gigs of the year will be written in black so it does stand out but not as much as the 100 as this is what's going to attract the readers. Well hopefully.

Page 34: Planning

Amie-MarieAmie-MarieThis is going to be the main cover line so it has to sum up the whole magazine in a few words which I think is a hard thing to do . But I do think that my pull quotes are good as everyone hates Amie for what she has done but with this interview she's hoping it will help to win her fans back or make them release what she has been through as no-one knows what goes on behind closed doors. I have creates an example so you can see what I'm on about and I wont be using that font but its clear enough to read and see the white background.

Page 35: Planning

• This is going to be in a white colour as this isn't as important as everything else said, as I could of left this part out but I felt it needed it as she's moving from Living For The Dead, to rehab and now to Avenged The Living so its almost like she's gone through a lot to get to where she is today.

Page 36: Planning

• This is very important so it has to be bold so it grabs the readers attention as they will only see Amie-Marie and will look for something else to quickly to read and will think wow she's back or go die or something like that. I do think that by having her on the front cover would be a big risk but I think its worth it as I got the idea for this story line from Oli Sykes as he acts like a complete and utter ( I'm not say it) to his fans. And I do admit I love his band BMTH and before he got famous he was amazing and when the fame hit he changed and in an interview with KERRANG! He told his life story and that's how I got the idea for my magazine.

Page 37: Planning

By having this it will draw the attention in even further for the reader to read on as Matt Litch was the lead Guitarist from Living For The Dead and everyone has a lot of respect for him but none for Amie so it will be good to change the record and have Her in the spot light for changing and Matt being made into the mean person for what he did too her.

Page 38: Planning

This is just the side part of the magazine as from my polls and research into magazines I fount out that free music or free downloads is a great way to get people to buy your magazine. Sometimes I buy the magazine for the free music. As they only cost £2-4 and where on earth can you buy up-to-date music for that price plus other freebies? Bargin I think. This is due to come on the day release of children of bodom CD. So I wouldn't affect their sales. I think its great that fans get to have a free track so its almost improving the fans and making more sales for the Children of Bodom’s CD.

Page 39: Planning

• This is the lowest part of the magazine as people don't tend to read this part- well I don't as it seems the most least important part of the magazine. As yes I'm following conventions well enough but I don't think it needs it? As there is already enough on the page. But supposing if people aren't bothered by a free track greatest gigs or Amie then the bottom part may interest them even more so I have to think up as many different genres of metal bands as I can. As I wouldn't want to loose any of my regular fans.

Page 40: Planning

I am hoping to create something like this. As its a very simple and basic layout so that its easy to read, and find out all the main info in this issue. Which is a good thing as the example below I think is far to busy and has way to much on it I don't know what too look at.

As there is a band member from children of bodom, 25 wildest tales in metal, rob zombie etc, 2 free posters and so much more I don't know what to look at 1st. I hope I don't make this mistake by having far to much on my front cover as it wouldn't be as good as a simple and basic one.

Page 41: Planning

1st draft of contents page This is my 1st draft of my contents page and where as I did lots of analysing for my front cover I am just going to do two drafts for this as I think it looks better like this. I do think that this is a good contents page and the next one is a good one. But I am unsure on this as I feel the pictures are floating about and aren't relevant to the articles. Which are displayed in the news etc. And the note from the editor, looks a bit out of place as there isn't enough text on the top half, so I don't think that this one isn't going to be the best option here. Also I think that I have used far to many images for a front cover so I may use my next draft?

Page 42: Planning

2nd draft of contents page I personally think that this draft is a lot better than my previous one as it looks a lot more organised than my previous one and the images don't look like they are floating all over the place. Which is better. Also I don't have as many images on this page which in turn makes it look more professional. Having the editors note on the top right hand side looks a lot more better placed there as I have more room for features in the magazine and I as you can see the images are larger so it has a bigger impact on the audience. I do have less information on what's in this issue, but I think that it looks a lot better as then this way people have to read on to find out what else is in the issue, as if I give everything away in the 1st page, then they may not bother to read on. Just like in a teaser trailer, you don't give everything away in the 1st 30 seconds you let the audience find out for themselves

Page 43: Planning

Double page spread cover page 1st draft

• This is the 1st draft for my double page spread I got the idea for this from Kerrnag! As they usually do this and create 6 4-6 pages for a double page spread. I do think that it is a good thing to do as its almost like welcoming you into the interview. Its almost like teasing you into reading on. I do like the image that I have planned to use and I hope that I can capture this. I'm unsure on the amount of text that I have used here. As I do think that there is far to much for this image its almost taking the focus away from the image and saying focus on me? I'm unsure on whether to use this or not.

Page 44: Planning

Draft 2 • I prefer this one as there is less text on this

page and the focus is on the image and the heading. Which I think is a good thing. As the text on the side is just a quote so it shouldn't be to much in focus. As I want the story line on the next page to be the main focus. The image on this page is going to be in black and white and heading “Love her” will have “hate her” will have “hate” under “her” as I think it fit in well with the image. And the text is going to be in black so it stands out against the grey image.

Page 45: Planning

1st page of double page spread

• I think that I may use this one as I think that it uses up the most space and the text isn't to squished and isn't wasting as much space as the next draft. I like the fact that there is an A4 image and that there is a small quote so that its not taking the focus away from the main image. The image on the 2nd side, I think relates better to the story than the image on the next page as yes she is smiling but its overloading the page. The use of Puff and pull quotes is proportioned well I am pleased with this design than the other one as I think that everything is placed a lot better here.

Page 46: Planning

2nd draft of double page spread

• Need to scan in

I'm not too keen on this one as I think that there are far to many pull quotes for the 1st page and it wouldn't be the best use of space that's available. I do like the fact that there is an A4 image so its almost like Amie’s having more of an impact on the story than if I had placed the two pages of writing on this page. I'm not keen with the slanted image of her smiling maybe this is to much for this story I think I may not use this one as there is too much going on and it may overload the reader with too much and they may choose to read other stories in the magazine.

Page 47: Planning

2nd page of double page spread draft 1 This is the 1st draft of the 4th page on my double page spread. I think that this is ok, but I don't think that I've designed the best use of the space. I think that I should get rid of most of the pull quotes as its to much as I don't need as many as its just wasting space, which could be used to make the story more interesting. The 2nd draft to me looks a lot better than this one. Considering this is Amie’s come back I don't think that I have used all the space that I can for her story. As I should maybe use a maximum of 3 pull quotes or just 2? As I don't need them as the font will be too stretched across the page and wont make the people take as much interest into the story than if I use less pull quotes. I like it when the text goes around the pull quote as it fits into the story more or when the pull quote goes into two columns as then it connects the story a lot more than on one column.

Page 48: Planning

2nd draft • This is my 2nd draft and in my

opinion is a lot better than my 1st one. As I don't have as many pull quotes, well I have two. This looks a lot better than the other one as I have one of them taking up two columns which is bring the story closer together. Also the reader can focus more eon the story and is having to re-read less less as pull quotes are bits of information from the story and I do think they will enjoy this a lot more than if it was the 1st draft .

Page 49: Planning

also after analysing many magazines in my previous power points. I have learnt that my images must have eye contact as it helps get the message across a lot quicker than if they model was looking away, but this doesn't matter as much in the double page spread; but on the front cover it is vital that my model is constantly looking at the camera, so that then the picture looks like its looking at you and more likely to grab your attention. I am hoping that I stick to my plan so that when I come to evaluate everything I don't have to change a lot of things. But if things have to be changed then they are for the best. Hopefully I have planned everything out so that you can clearly see I have been influenced from the start and not half way through the production. I think that taking the pictures will be the easy part as the locations are easy, and if it rains it wont matter as they both a cover. The hardest part for me will be using in design. As when I used it to create my preliminary task, I fount it incredibly hard to use; but I think after using it a couple of times I will be more confident with it. As I do think it will give my magazine a better finish than publisher as it doesn't have all the features that in design has. The colour scheme will be easy to achieve as they go for dark and very bright colours. I.e. black and red and green and yellow will be good to use. For my drafts of everything I created a really long one for my front cover as this is the main part of the magazine as this is what attracts the target audience and gets people to look inside the magazine.
