System Architecture and Functions of DSpace
Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) v2.0 DSpace item records can be made
available from harvesting Institutions have an option to turn on
or off OAI Institutions can choose to register as
data provider or not
System Architecture and Functions of DSpace
Mark-up language~ HTML/XHTML Script languages~ Java Script Hardware requirements~ UNIX
operating system Recommended~ good server with
memory and disk storage
System Architecture and Functions of DSpace
System Architecture and Functions of DSpace
Submit items using a web based interface
Data files/bitstreams are organized together
Item is archived with metadata Collection is part of a community Offers functional preservation End-user can browse and search
Metadata
• Dublin Core metadata• Some metadata is done
mechanically File sizes Checksums Full-text indexing
Metadata
Information about the content creator (rights, contributors, publisher)
Information about the content that will help it to be found (coverage, description, title, subject, relationships)
Information about the resource (formats, system requirements, date, identification)
Optional Dublin Core metadata can be added at the catalogers discretion
Metadata• “dc.date.created” can be used when
the “date of creation or manufacture of intellectual content if different from date issued” (DSpace)
• “dc.format” can be used as a “catch-all for any format information not defined by qualifiers” (DSpace)
• “dc.format.requires” can be used when a “referenced resource is required to support function, delivery, or coherence of item” (DSpace)
Metadata
For this project Descriptive metadata Added several subjects Age Location Video Title- used names of people or animals
User Interface and Functions
Basic Search~ enter a term Advanced Search~ users can
choose “and”, “or”, “not” and enter terms in 3 search boxes
Browse, by title or subject~ best for my collection
User Interface and Functions
Added “video” as a subject for all videos Videos can be found together
Unable to create sub-collections by age Used “one year old”, “four years old” so
that photos/videos of ages can be found together

Part V: User Interface and Functions
Part VI: Implementation Issues using DSpace
Interoperability Formats that are
unrecognized are unsupported
DSpace does not know enough about these files to preserve them
Scalability Does not seem to
be an issue Need a good server
with memory and storage
