Percent Change Day 2:Given Original and Percent
Change, Find the New Amount
Therefore,
__% of (original amt.) = (amt. of change)
By Jim Olsen, W.I.U.#P18
In percent change situations, there are four numbers to pay attention to:
1. Original amount (the “old”/“starting” amount before the change)
2. New amount (the “ending” amount after the change)3. Amount of change (the difference [subtract] between
original and new)4. Percent change (percent increase or decrease).
Recall from Day 1
Put the known numbers in the chart, then figure out the others.
Definition of Percent Change is
Percent change=amount of changeoriginal amountIf these are known, then find the amount of change
first. Then you can find the “new amount.”
In other words:Take the percent of the original to find the amount of change.
Percent change is used in almost every aspect of life to describe change – and
our world is changing!
Examples:1. If Kevin is currently consuming 3000 calories per day
and wants to increase it by 15%, how many calories will he consume after the increase?
Amount of changeMethod 1: Percent change
Original amount
.153000
(.15)*(3000) 450 amount of change
New amount 3000 450 3450 calories

Another way:1. If Kevin is currently consuming 3000 calories per day
and wants to increase it by 15%, how many calories will he consume after the increase?
Method 2: 15% of 3000 is amount of change
(.15)*(3000) 450 amount of change
New amount 3000 450 3450 calories

Method 2: 200% of 73 is amount of change
(2.)*(73) 143 amount of change
New amount 73 143 219 hits
Examples:
3. This year we have $2,200 budgeted for travel expenses. For next year there is a budget cut of 8%. How much will we have for travel next year?
