Bit about BIG
• Funding across health, education, environment & charitable purposes

• Funding between £400 - £600m pa across the UK
Funding Context
• 2010/11: received over 31,000 applications requesting just under £3billion

• Almost 13,000 awards we made last year were grants of £300 - £10,000
People Powered Change
We want to use BIG’s funding and
influence to:
• Support and unleash the talents of individuals and community groups
• Create the space to celebrate the individuals and communities that make a difference to the lives of those most in need
• Provide the opportunity to showcase collaborative activities that we believe will have a long-lasting impact
The first investments focussed onempowering communities and people to build a better future:
• NESTA: Neighborhood Challenge• Young Foundation: Building Activism• UnLtd: Big Venture Challenge• Your Square Mile• Media Trust• Manchester Evening News pilot
People Powered Change investments
• Believe BIG should have a stronger role building/enabling/supporting networks that help people and projects
• Need to become more ‘social’ extending reach and impact of events & outreach
• Encourage funded projects to become more ‘social’ and share learning more accessibly
• Consider new approaches to assessment, evaluation and open data
People Powered Change: More than just funding…?
• Lots of innovative ideas
• What are the next key investments that BIG should be considering?
• Where are some of the gaps and opportunities that BIG could/should support?
• PPC will inform our future funding in England
People Powered Change: What about future investment?
• Exploring how people can best share stories about community-led action through events and networking, using a mix of media.
– mapping the national networks that help people share and collaborate
– showing how social media can extend events beyond those in the room
– promoting examples of reporting that help give citizens and local groups a stronger voice
– strengthen existing networks and build new ones.
People Powered Change & Social Reporters:
Next steps:
• Informs a broader strategy for PPC and a paper that will go to our England Committee
• Seek to develop ideas further through open dialogue and potential funding
• Further announcements in the New Year
