• Teaches your children responsibility
• Affects achievement in school
• Is the key link between home and school
How to help them with the homework
• set up a proper study area
• Get homework finished on time
• Get your children do homework on their own.
• Motivate your children with praise
• Communicate assertively with them
Set up a proper study area
• Tell your children that they must have a special place where they will do homework
• Make sure that the space is well lit
• Post a “DO NOT DISTURB” sign during homework time
• Equip your child’s work space with a Homework Survival Kit.
Schedule Time for your children to do their homework
• Make sure all of your children’s scheduled activities written down on the daily schedule
• Determine the length of time needed each day for homework
• Determine the best time of the day.
• If necessary , establish mandatory homework time.
Let children work on their own
• Do not do the work for your children
• Do not teach concepts to your children
• Use the process of encouragement
Motivation/Incentives
• Developing Incentive Systems:
• Decide the problem behaviors
• Forgetting materials for homework?
• Not writing down assignments?
• Rushing while completing work?
• Complaining during the homework routine?
• Set goals
• Create a homework contract with your child
• The contract should include the rewards/penalties for homework procedures.
• Monitor Progress and Follow Through with rewards/penalties
• Stay consistent and keep track of the behaviors using a device such as a sticker chart.
Motivation
• A hug or a pat on the shoulder will increase the impact of your message
• Tell the specifically what you like about what they are doing or what they have done.
Incentives
• Tell your children that you are going to use some new ideas to help them do their homework
• Choose an incentive your child will appreciate
• Remember that giving incentives is your choice
