What does this mean?

• Mastery of basic concepts is a MUST.• This includes :(a) Knowing times table (including division) at

the finger tips(b) Not being over reliant on calculator for basic

operations(c) Being careful in computation (4 operations)

and transference of numbers

Page 22: P6 mtp session 2011

Page 24: P6 mtp session 2011

What does this mean?

• SPEED & ACCURACY• Importance in writing down the steps, not

just the solutions. (Tendency to punch in numbers and write

down the answers -> forgot to write down number statements -> loss of method marks)

• Being careful in transference of numbers and answers.

Page 25: P6 mtp session 2011

What does this mean?

• Building stamina and speed to complete 18 questions in 1 h 40 min

• When given school work and exercises, the child must at least ATTEMPT to understand the questions and show some steps.

• (NO BLANKS are allowed as this encourages the child to be habitually “helpless” and dependent on others for answers.)

• Any attempts to do the exam questions, will have a chance of being right and getting method marks.

Page 26: P6 mtp session 2011

Essential stationery in Maths

• Model drawing ruler / proper ruler• Set squares• Protractor• Analog watch• MOE Approved Calculator

Page 27: P6 mtp session 2011

Expectations

• Work is to be done neatly using a ball-point pen (NOT felt tip pen).

• Corrections is to be done using a green pen.• Corrections MUST show steps and not just the

answers.

Page 28: P6 mtp session 2011

Use of Algebra

• Using Algebra as a problem solving strategy is strongly encouraged

• However, your child must be able to understand the story sum in order to be able to apply concepts of algebra in her solution.

Page 29: P6 mtp session 2011

General Weak Areas• Conversion of units of measurement Eg. 3.08 km = _____ m• Conversion of fractions/percentage/decimals• Area, Perimeter & Volume : Remembering

formulas & applying it correctly Eg. Area of triangle – locating the correct base

and height Finding cube root/square root

Page 30: P6 mtp session 2011

• Reduce Fear Factor

• Communicate numbers

Apply maths to daily events

Provide opportunities

Maths Games / Puzzles / PE

HELP OUR CHILDREN LIKE MATHS

Page 31: P6 mtp session 2011

How your child can score better in Math in simple ways

• Present her methods neatly and clearly• Show what she has found by putting short

phrases to minimise confusion. Eg. 560 – (10 x 2) = 540 [Millie’s share]• Handwriting is important. Eg. 0 and 6• Ask questions during and after lessons to

clarify
