Teaching point: Meeting people / Arranging events / Suggesting/ Tenses

Marga: Hi! This is Marga. Could I speak to Alice?

Sara: Please, hold on. She is coming.

Ana: Hello Marga, I was trying to get through to you in the morning, but it was impossible.

M: I’m calling about our meeting. I‘ve just let everybody know the address and how to get there.

A: Thanks a lot for coming up with this idea.

M: I’ve been working on this idea of gathering with our ex-classmates since I bumped into Rose last year.

A: Ok; now we have to think about how to prepare the meeting.

M: I really don’t feel like cooking. I think that it’d be better to ask each one to bring something to share.

A: In that case, how can we do to have a complete meal?

M: In this way, I’ll prepare a list with different kinds of foods; healthy salads, grilled meats, not fattening

foods or spicy , deserts . We’ll send it by e-mail, and each one will have to choose.

A: Great idea! According to this, we’ll have a balanced diet. I’m sure that everybody will agree. However, we also

know that there are always some people who are so fussy and big-headed that they’ll never support us.

M: Well, we are doing our best and we want to do it. I’ll get in touch with you next Friday. Bye.

A: Thanks for everything, have a nice day, see you on Friday; bye bye

Hi Sabrina,

I want to tell you some news about my next holidays. January is my favorite month, so I rented

Buquebus. The apartment is comfortable, two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and

bathroom, with a large window facing the sea.

I must remember to unplug the refrigerator and stop the newspaper delivery. I´ll ask my sister

to water the plants, she has my keys. The worst is packing and unpacking!!! :)

Would you like to spend some days with me? If you agree, please let me know how many

days you will take on holidays because the first week my boyfriend will stay with me.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Dear Gary,

Sorry for not answering before.

My daughter Miriam’s mother-in-law fell and broke one of her femurs. Last week she got an

operation, but unfortunately she died yesterday. The funeral was this morning.

We really appreciate the cash gift you will send. However, I don’t know what the best way to

send it is. Next week, I’m going to the bank where I have a saving account and I’ll find out if

you can transfer the money from the USA to Buenos Aires. I’ll let you know as soon as I get

that information.

Love,

Eugenio

I've visited a lot of places in my life. I've been to different countries of South America and of Europe. I’ve visited Peru many times because I have close friends there, and Spain because my daughter lives in Madrid. I love Madrid.

My best vacation memory is a cruise by the Northern Sea of Europe. I visited Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and S. Petersburg. It is a fabulous city, with outstanding buildings, particularly the Hermitage Museum, where you can spend a lovely day.

I'm planning to repeat this cruise in the future with my friends. I have advised them that it would be better to go in June, in order to enjoy the white nights and the long days.

I always remember going on vacations with my parents. In spite of not having enough

money they thought about vacations as a way to rest and relax, not luxury. We used to go to

the beach together and had great moments. Our last vacation together took place in

Bariloche. We went to a lot of day-trips there, we enjoyed hiking, and the last day we went to

Victoria Island.

I was shocked by the beauty of this small island. While my parents were in the restaurant, I

walked to the lake. I saw small stones of different colors, shells, beautiful birds flying and

singing. I lay down and fell completely asleep. When I woke up I run to the port. My parents

were standing, waiting for my, with long faces. They were furious. Arrayanes forest was the

next stop and they had missed the ship. My father was really angry since he knew that,

perhaps, it would be his last opportunity to visit that wonderful place.

Years later I knew the Arrayanes forest, travelling with my friends. I also travelled there with

my mother, but my father did not have the same luck. He passed away and I always

remember me laying on the floor, feeling nature, without thinking about my parents who were

waiting for me.

In my life I have been to many countries in three continents. I have

travelled mainly as a tourist. I have visited people in some places and

have studied in others. I´ve had a lot of interesting experiences.

When I was very young, in 1965, I stayed a whole year in Israel

studying institutional leadership. I met there people from all over the

world. However, my last travel experience was totally different. I went to

the Netherlands for three months, to visit my son´s family and take care

of his baby daughter. Anyway, at weekends I could visit very nice places

in Holland and Belgium.

I cannot give you any piece of advice about travelling. I only can tell you:

don´t forget your passport, money, cards and luggage and enjoy your

experience!

Years ago I used to go on vacation to Punta del Este, Uruguay. I travelled with my husband

and my children, when they were teenagers. We liked going in February. We used to rent

apartments facing the sea. We went there seven or eight times, but I particularly remember

one of the vacations there about twenty years ago. It was unforgettable.

I had an unforgettable vacation because the weather was rainy or partially cloudy all the

time, and really really cold in the afternoons and nights. Every morning I put on the swimming

suit trying to be optimistic and went to the beach. However, to my dismay, I ended up putting

on a sweater because It was freezing. We spent the days playing “Buraco” under a great

umbrella at a table just looking at the sea, swimming was impossible.

If you are thinking about going in February to Punta Del Este, I’ll give a good piece of advice

to have a good vacation: you should take light dresses and a coat just in case.

My first travel experience I had was leaving my old town in Poland, when I was 7 years old.

After a night train journey we arrived in Gdynia, better known now as Dancig. There we took

a little ship to London, where my mother’s friend took us to un unforgettable coffee shop.

Afterwards, we crossed the Atlantic Ocean as passengers of a bigger ship, the Alcantara,

final destination: Buenos Aires, where my father was waiting for us.

Some years later, I got the opportunity to take other trips. I have been in several places like

Rome, Geneva, Bari, Naples (in Italy), Paris, Cannes (in France), Tel Aviv and Jerusalem (in

Israel), Stockholm (in Sweden), London (in England) -but thirty years after my fist visit-, New

York, Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Reno and Las Vegas with their wonderful huge

casinos, and Hawaii Islands in the United States. I cannot forget the wonderful landscape of

Brazil, where I enjoyed the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, Natal and Fortaleza in the north. Here

in Argentina I often go to Mar del Plata, but I also love the mountains of Mendoza as well as

the Iguazu falls.

As you see, I have been in many places but if I had to choose the one that I like the most,

the one I always remember and I will never forget, this place is: New York.

Brief summary of my life I was born in Buenos Aires, more exactly in a Jewish neighbourhood called "Once", in 1946. My mother had a long painful labour for my birth. We lived in a small flat for a couple years . My sister was 8 years old when I was born and she became a kind of second mother for me. My first years were almost perfect, except for a terrible allergy I had in my skin that made me cry a lot and made my mother and sister worry a lot. Unfortunately, something happened when I was 4, something that changed my childhood completely, and influenced the rest of my life. My father had a terrible accident. He fell down from the ninth floor into the hole of an elevator. He lost his right leg and saved his life by miracle. I got a psychological trauma and I have been suffering from the effects since then. My mother and sister have been damaged too. Other three events were crucial in my life. First, when we moved to a large apartment in the same built where almost all my relatives and friends lived too. There, I learned how to live in a group, by doing interesting things, that made me grow up a lot. After many years, my wedding and the birth of my children were important and emotional moments full of happiness. Unluckily, a third event made me deeply sad. My husband left our home and I´ve had to bring up my children alone. Finally, I think my life has been balanced so far with rich and happy experiences. In spite of the difficulties, I managed to study, work and travel a lot. I´ve got two wonderful children who made me a grandmother. I´ve got a grandson and a granddaughter, and now I´m expecting another grandson. Thanks to my efforts, I have a great family now, plenty of love. In conclusion: life is worth and beautiful!!!

Brief story (summary???) of my life

I was born in Buenos Aires, more exactly in a jewish neibourhood called "Once". My family lived in a small flat,

fortunatly kept him life by miracle. I´ve got a psycological "trauma" (es igual!!) whose effects continues untill

now, my mother and sister also well.

Other three events were crucial in my life. First, when we moved to a long apartament in the same built where

have been moved all my relatives and friends. There I´ve learned living in group doing interesting things

together, wich made me increase a lot. After many years, my marriage and the arrive of my children were very

I was born at Pasaje Nicolás Granada. It was a street of only one block long and it was closed

by other two streets in their extremes. I still remember their names and how many people

lived in each house. I spent my childhood there.

We learnt to play a lot of games. First with our dolls, then we used to play hide and seek, play

tag (la mancha). We also liked pretending we were statues, we loved running, singing and, to

your surprise, we also played soccer, basketball and other ball games in the balconies or

using the front doors as goals.

We used to have many “visitors” such as the milkman, another person who sold fruit in a

small cart dragged by an old horse, the man who sold ice, etc. It was our world.

Without noticing, we started to grow up. We went to the movies, we went for longer walks

and met other people who lived in other streets, other neighborhoods. We were “losing” our

street. Other interests occupied our minds and Pasaje Nicolás Granada which was still our

street, happened to be only our address.

I always remember my house, the big yard and its roof of purple glycines hanging over me. I

also can see me dancing there, I felt the music in my head and my body moved itself. Years

later, when I finished my primary school and received a pair of roller-skates as a gift, I tried to

learn to skate in that yard. And in the same yard, we used to gather with my friends to dance

the new hits of the moment, spending wonderful time, meeting new friends, new experiences,

in two words: “growing up”.

During my secondary school I was very busy studying, meeting new friends, boyfriends and

doing sports. My relationship with my club, SHA, was very important to me. Not only

because it was the place where I discovered my love for sports, but also I learnt a lot about

Judaism. I started studying about it and learning Hebrew.

Among my friends I met the special one. I still wonder why he was so special, but he became

my husband, the father of my four children. We have had a beautiful life together and now

that we are not as young as we used to be we are trying to live this new stage.
