Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Introduction: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) (formerly Organization of the Islamic Conference) is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations which has membership of 57 states spread over four continents. The Organization is the collective voice of the Muslim world and ensuring to safeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony among various people of the world. History: The Organization was established upon a decision of the historical summit which took place in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on 25 th September 1969 as a result of criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem. Aims, Objectives and Principles: 1. Solidarity among Muslim states. 2. Safeguard the common interest and respect the respect the right of self-determination. 3. Ensure active participation and reaffirm its support for the rights of people as in UN Charter. 4. Enhance and develop science and technology. 5. Member states are equal in rights and bound to follow UN Charter. 6. Member states shall settle their disputes through peaceful means. Summit Conferences: Total 12 summits were held till the date. 1 st summit was held in Rabat, Maraksh. 2 nd summit conference was held in Lahore, Pakistan which was supposed to be the successful Islamic summit conference and 12 th was held in Cairo. 13 th Islamic Summit meeting is supposed to be held in 2016 in Turkey. Stance on Conflicts: From 1969 to 2014 we can see OIC has failed to settle Palestine and Kashmir issue and Iran and Iraq conflicts as well. Islamic University of Technology is working which is funded by OIC but the idea of creation of an Islamic bank is not happened to be completed. Pakistan’s Position in OIC: Pakistan continues to enjoy a privileged status id OIC. In terms of population it is the second largest member of OIC, because of having only Muslim country nuclear weapons, 7 th largest military force and labor workforce in other Islamic countries. ‘Islamic Summit Minar’ is built on Mall road Lahore in the memory of 2 nd summit conference which was held in Lahore back in 1974. Pakistan’s threat to boycott OIC has restricted India to join the OIC even having 12% Muslim population of the world. The Final Words: We all know Muslim rulers have ruled by large on all over the world for centuries but unfortunately from last hundred of years Muslims are oppressed by non-Muslims around the world. To unite 1.5 billion Muslims, OIC is the best platform to safeguard and protect the common interests of all the Muslims it is utilized by its original and true spirit.
