Was an American foreign policy in the early 20th century that was proposed by the U.S. Secretary of State, Henry Clay in 1899 and 1900’s. What is the main purpose of the Open Door

Policy? The Open Door Policy called for equal foreign

commercial access to China. The reason being that at the time only certain countries (major powers) were getting special privileges and getting their hands on all the commercial products of China.

In other words, asking foreign powers to agree to have commercial access to China on equal terms, and at the same time respect China’s territorial integrity.

During the Boxers Rebellion in 1900 the international powers sent armies to Beijing, while Hay ensured that the Policy would adhere as well.

In the 1920’s is when China regains some powers and hold on until the 1930’s when they decided to overthrow the policy and occupied Manchuria (1931) and costal China (1937). Which lead into conflicts with Japan and the U.S. causing war between them in 1941.

The Policy was later reaffirmed by the Nine Power Treaty in 1922.

The boxers were the Chinese's army and when they broke out in the 1900’s with the cry “Kill Foreign Devils” they killed more than two hundred foreigners and thousands of Chinese Christians that sided with these foreigners. This even is known as the boxer rebellion.

The only way to quell this rebellion was by sending eighteen thousand soldiers from the places surrounding such as several thousands American troops coming from the Philippines to make sure the Policy was still propped open.
