Building the Foundation for Lifelong Learning and Success

The ability to read and write changes the future of our students. Studies have shown a strong correlation between being able to read at grade level in third grade and graduating highschool. Imagine being able to increase highschool graduation rates, by ensuring all students that they will learn how to read and write on grade level by grade 3. In doing that, we are truly changing the future.

Foundational Skills KitsProvides K-3 students classroom-proven, systematic, and explicit instruction to help students learn the foundation of reading and writing.

Open court reading Foundational Skills Kit is the program that give our students the foundation for lifelong learning. It provides K-3 students classroom-proven, systematic, and explicit instruction so that they have reading and writing skills needed to propel them through their education.2

Stands Alone

OCR has different options for implementation to best suit any school model. It can complement any core reading and language arts program for additional foundational skill instruction and practice. It can serve as a supplement to any guided reading or leveled reader program, linking reading with essentialfoundational skill. Or, it can be a stand-alone program, providing foundational skill instruction for any student.3

Research

SRA Open Court Reading has a 50 year legacy of success in classrooms and research proven results. From the time it was originally founded in 1962, until today, it has changed literacy instruction with its systematic and explicit approach.4

Components and Technology

Now, it is not exactly the same as it was in 1962. We know todays classroom is preparing 21st Century students and needs 21st century technology. For teachers, they have online access to their teachers editions for ease of planning, along with differentiated instruction tools. Students have access to their content online as well. What a great way to incorporate literacy and 21st century technology. All materials are also in print, so classes can implement a hybrid model, or whichever program fits their needs. Once the materials are in place, were ready to begin the process of learning literacy.

5

FOUNDATIONS for Lifelong Literacy

This process starts with building the foundations that are essential for lifelong literacy.6

Easy to Teach. Easy to Reach

Foundations for Lifelong Literacy

KindergartenFirst GradeSecond GradeThird Grade

Lifelong Learners

In grade K, students develop phonemic awareness and learn about concepts of print. They begin to explore sounds, letters, and the alphabetic principle. In Grade 1, students learn sound-spelling correspondences, practice blending and segmenting, and develop initial spelling strategies. In Grade 2, students expand on fluency and continue to learn the mechanics of decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) written language. In Grade 3, students analyze word structure to unlock the meanings of words, which enables them to read with fluency while developing comprehension.7

SYSTEMATIC Teaching. SYSTEMATIC Learning.

This foundation is they key to literacy, but in order for students to gain these skills, they need a program built with systematic instruction.8

Systematic Teaching. Systematic Learning.

Building a Firm Foundation

The systematic, explicit instructional plan helps build students abilities through a logical progression of skills. Just like the foundation, skills are taught to build on each other. OCR also has an overlapping pattern that lets teachers introduce new skills, while simultaneously reinforcing those previously learned. And to make sure every student learns, core concepts and skills are reinforced at every level to scaffold the foundation for students.

9

Easy to Teach. Easy to Reach

Systematic Teaching. Systematic Learning.

The teachers edition provides this systematic instruction, along with best practice strategies and plans that are easy to use. Each lesson has the standards at point of use and follows routines so that teachers and students know what to expect and class runs smoothly.

10

Easy to Teach. Easy to Reach

Systematic Teaching. Systematic Learning.

In kindergarten, students learn the sounds and letters of the alphabet using the sound spelling cards. With the sound-spelling cards, students will see the letter, the sound, a picture, and action that makes the sound of the picture. This knowledge will form the foundations for first grade, where students will learn all sounds and spellings in the English Language with the 44 sound-spelling cards.

11

Easy to Teach. Easy to Reach

Systematic Teaching. Systematic Learning.

Using the sound/spelling cards, students are preparing for lifelong spelling success. The cards have clues and devices within the program to teach spelling rules. You can see in this example, that students learn a short vowel will end with the spelling tch, as seen by the green card and green space. Sound spelling cards give students spelling knowledge and the confidence to write.

12

Easy to Teach. Easy to Reach

Systematic Teaching. Systematic Learning.

As students learn the sounds and spellings, they review and reinforce their knowledge through decodable books and build fluency and comprehension.13

Easy to Teach. Easy to Reach

And in grades 2-3, students begin to incorporate word analysis or the study of word structure. Being able to identify and read meaningful chunks of words helps students learn vocabulary and understand how key word parts change meaning.

You can see how OCR foundational skills kit truly has everything needed to build lifelong literacy. But we also want to make sure that every student learns.15

Intervention SupportChallenge ActivitiesEnglish Learner ExtensionsContrastive Analysis Charts

We do this through differentiated instruction. Teachers are given differentiated instruction for Intervention Support but also challenge activities for students who are excelling. Not only that, but English learner extensions are provided and there is a contrastive analysis charts providing language comparisons. These are referenced at point of use in the teacher manual, so the teacher knows when to implement these key differentiated components. Students are not left behind or bored waiting for their peers to reach their level.

OCR also provides both formal and informal assessments. Informal assessments are listed daily within the teachers manual, moving from guided to independent practice, and formal assessments are at the end of each lesson and unit. These assessments measure student understanding of material that was recently taught and ensures that students are a master level before progressing forward.17

And we also provide support along the way. Professional Development resources are readily available, and there are even sample lessons for teachers to watch and glean new strategies for their classrooms.18
