2. The first stage:- drawing out the design. The canvas was primed using Titanium White acrylic gesso. Over this a layer of oil primer was added. The grey streaks on this layout drawing are where the wet oil primer has mixed with the graphite. 3. Modifying the Drawing I used a sight-size method for this small (12x16) painting. The figure with the easel on the left is imagined, as is the left rug. Using vertical and horizontal lines to check perspective and measurements helped create a proportional layout. 4. The first layer of oil paint was added This layer is very diluted and used for colour mapping Sans Odour was mixed with the paint to thin it out Neutral grey was created by mixing cobalt blue, paynes grey and white. Once the paint goes on all the drawing adjustments need to be made in oil paint, not in pencil. 5. Adding in more diluted colours 6. More colours are added in Where areas are modified, redrawn or reworked thicker paint is used As the painting progresses the ratio of Sans Odour to Oil Paint goes down until only the paint is used. 7. Moving through the painting to fill in all the areas The tones of the nearest face are lifted using paint free of Sans Odour 8. Once the painting is filled the process of making adjustments begins. I went over many of the main areas of detail again, using only oil paint, in order to bring up the colours and increase the detail. To the right is the finished painting. WWW.CHARLIEKIRKS.COM 9.
