Presenter’s Notes
This presentation has been developed to assist managers introduce the Office Golden Rules (OGR) to relevant employees, temporary workers and contractors
There is a more detailed Briefing Note to support the process which should be read in conjunction with this presentation
There is an OGR booklet and a series of posters Initial supplies will be provided FOC by Business Administration
(BA) Additional supplies can be obtained from the BA Print Manager
in Wolverhampton Line managers shall arrange to conduct a briefing with
relevant staff by 31.03.2008. A computer based training (CBT) package will be available at
the beginning of Q2 2008 Relevant staff should complete the CBT by 31.06.2008
Introduction
The Golden Rules were introduced for high risk activities such as quarries, works, National Contracting etc
Office workers considered the Golden Rules Relevant to industrial locations Not relevant to office environments
Several requests for Office Golden Rules Developed by a working group from the Wolverhampton
SHE Committee and Business Administration Reviewed LTIs in offices Generic hazards and risks
The Office Golden Rules
Six Office Golden Rules cover:
Visitors
Fire
Moving around the building
Mobile phones
Housekeeping
Vehicles and car parks
Visitors
All visitors are to sign in and out at Reception
and passes are to be worn at all times
Those hosting visitors are responsible for
their safety while on site
First time visitors are to be collected from
and returned to Reception by their hosts
Hosts must carry out a short, informal safety
induction covering the Office Golden Rules
and fire procedures
Hosts should be aware of the needs of any
disabled visitors
Fire
Know your emergency route
Know your Fire Assembly Point
Do not obstruct fire exits – including
corridors, walkways, landings etc
Do not operate an extinguisher
unless trained and authorised
Do not use electrical extension leads
unless they are approved and
supplied by Tarmac
Do not plug in any electrical
equipment which has not been PAT
tested or approved
Moving around the building
Always use the handrail when using stairs
If you are unable to use the handrails
because you are carrying things, use the
lift or agree a safe alternative method if it
is not possible to use the lift
Use a suitable trolley or lifting device to
transport heavy or bulky items around the
building
Always use a drinks tray or cup holder for
hot drinks
Only carry one drinks tray at a time and
don’t overload it
Don’t carry drinks up or down the stairs
Mobile phones
Do not use mobile phones on steps,
stairs or areas where there may be
vehicles
If using a mobile phone in a corridor
or walkway, be aware of others
around you and avoid causing an
obstruction
Adhere to the Tarmac mobile phone
policy whilst driving
Housekeeping
Keep work areas clear and tidy
Do not store boxes or other
bulky items on top of cupboards
Keep cables tidy to avoid
creating a trip hazard
Never climb on desks or chairs
Do not leave drawers and
cupboard doors open
Vehicles and car parks
Observe the local speed limits
Drivers and passengers must
wear seat belts
Use the pedestrian walkways
and crossing points
Always park considerately
allowing access for other
vehicle users
Make eye contact with the
driver before crossing in front
of any vehicle
