WILLIAMS PARKWAY SENIOR PUBLIC SCHOOL 1285 Williams Parkway, Brampton, ON L6S Page 1 We will soon be approaching the end of term one and teachers are beginning to work on report cards. We are reminding students to complete any overdue work and submit it as soon as possible. Also, at Williams Parkway, we offer students many before and after school, as well as lunch time activities. We are encouraging more student participation in these extra-curricular events. The students are also reminded to take advantage of peer tutoring in math on Mondays and Tuesdays at 11:25. Thanks to the efforts of the Williams Parkway leadership team, our first Subway Lunch Order day was a HUGE success with over 70 staff and students purchasing a healthy lunch. Every Wednesday this offer of a 6" sandwich (vegetarian, ham & cheese or Assorted Meats) a drink (Kool-Aid Jammer or water) and a Chocolate Chip Chewy Granola bar, will be available for purchase for $5.00. Students who wish to order a lunch are asked to bring $5.00 cash to the front doors of the school each Wednesday morning BEFORE 8:15 a.m. to place their order. ACTIVITY FEES which have not been submitted MUST be returned ASAP. In order for students to attend this year's graduation celebration in June this activity fee must be submitted. Also, thanks to the enthusiasm of our Leadership Team in their effort to boost school spirit, many Williams Parkway Hoodies were ordered this year! We look forward to receiving the order in the next few weeks. As soon as they are delivered they will be distributed to students who are patiently awaiting their arrival. THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE Miss N. Patel is proud to report that due to the generosity and kindness of the Williams Parkway community, many boxes of food were donated to our local food banks. In a few short days, many students and staff brought in non perishable food items such as pasta, canned food and baby formula to help in the effort. Your support is greatly appreciated. We look forward to increasing donations for our upcoming Holiday Food Drive which will take place in December. If your son or daughter is interested in attending Mayfield Secondary School next September to pursue their interest in Visual arts, Music, Drama and or Dance, you are invited to attend an information night on October 29th at 7-8pm. Page 2 wonderful community and school-based event that gets your child involved in loads of fun stuff at school and helps to raise money for cancer. It is an event which takes place worldwide including Brampton which hosts such an event every June. It involves having your child be part of a team whereby each member has raised an amount of money (minimum amount to be determined) for Cancer through having people they know donate any amount which can also be done on-line so that no money actually needs to be collected. Each of the participants from the team takes his/her turn walking or running out on the track for short periods of time, something which occurs all night long over a period of 12 hours from 7pm til 7am. In between they are involved in many fun events, eating, and camping out overnight in the gym. Security and the safety of your child is ensured and of course is paramount. To kick-off the event, a Survivor’s Victory Lap takes place whereby any community members living with cancer lead-off the opening lap as everyone else cheers them on. As night falls, a luminary ceremony takes place which involves the purchase of luminary bags for $5 which the children decorate and on which they write the name of someone they know who has passed away from cancer. A candle is placed in the bag and all the bags light up the pathway of the track all night long. It is a particularly touching and beautiful event. When will this event take place? We have set aside Friday, May 22, 2009 as the tentative date. If it is indeed an overnight event, Relay

the turnout, and the students are having a blast. The group will run until the December holidays, please contact Mr. Marcovici if you'd like to participate.

The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course

We have the opportunity four our students to participate in a Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Course. This is a fun filled workshop that includes everything from diapering, first aid, safety tips, rights & responsibilities of everyone involved, physical capabilities of all ages of children, what makes a good babysitter, tips for SAFELY finding babysitting jobs and much more! This course has valuable information for children that stay at home alone. This course will be offered at Williams Parkway Public School as a lunch program on Tuesday Jan. 20, 27, Feb. 3, 10, 17, 24 and March 3, 2009 from 11:00 am -12 noon. The course cost is $35.00 and will include the Canadain Red Cross Babysitting Manual & wallet card. Permission forms will be sent home with all Grade 6, 7, & 8 students on November 13th and must be returned on or before December 5th with full payment. Registration forms will be accepted on a first-come first-serve basis. The maximum class size is 30-35.

What is it? Relay for Life is an initiative of the Canadian Cancer Society. It’s a

all interested. Do not hesitate to pursue what you enjoy! See Miss N Patel, Ms. Romaniello or Mr. Peet for further information. The City of Brampton has informed Williams Parkway that Parking Control Officers will be making regular visits to Williams Parkway this year. Please ensure that you are not parking in the fire route directly in front of the school.

will take place from 7pm Friday May 22nd until 7am Saturday morning May 23rd. If it is not an overnight event, it will still take place afternoon of May 22nd until later at night of the 22nd. Has Williams Parkway partici-pated before? Yes, 2 years ago we hosted a “Relay for Life” which had our students involved in an evening-long event which included having Mayor Susan Fennel attend and Trustee Beryl Ford. Our event was showcased in the Brampton Guardian and was broadcast on Roger’s Cable Ten. Some of the events were: a bouncy castle; an illusionist show; karaoke; raffles for some great prizes; video games; music; and food, food, food. We invited surviving Cancer members from our community to walk the first lap, and we held a Luminary Ceremony which lit up the track out back upon nightfall. How may I as a parent help out? 1) First and foremost, encourage your child to participate. 2) Volunteer your time either at any time over the course of the year or at the actual event doing such things as serving food or even spending the night. 3) Contacting companies in Brampton who you think would be likely to donate food, prizes, etc. for the event; or perhaps you have contacts from work who you think would contribute to the event either by offering some free service or you know a celebrity who could speak or perform at our event. 4) Providing names of family members or friends who are presently living with cancer who you think would like to be part of

How schools keep students, staff safe

The Peel District School Board follows a number of procedures to ensure our schools are a safe place to work and learn. Schools use the following safety strategies:

• All visitors are required to report to the main office and obtain a visitor's pass.

• Students use a "buddy system" when leaving the classroom — to go to the washroom, library etc.

• Teachers supervise students in-side and outside the school dur-ing recesses and before and after school.

• All exterior doors, except the main entrance, are locked during school hours.

• Street-proofing skills are re-viewed regularly with students

• Staff and students are expected to report unidentified individuals to the office immediately.

• Hold fire drills and "lockdown" rehearsals.

• Ensure evacuation plans are in place.

• All staff and volunteers have up-to-date criminal record checks.

• Work with the police to educate students about safety.

The grade 8 student Ambassadors are a group of students who work together each year to help in and around our school community. This year, we have adopted the Chum City Christmas Wish as our social cause. We will be fundraising through candy grams, bake sales and other events to raise money to buy presents for kids ages 12 – 16 at in December. This group was chosen as they are often forgotten when people make donations around the holidays. If you would like to donate your time, money or a gift to the Chum City Christmas Wish through the student Ambassadors, please speak to Ms Romaniello. Williams Parkway's website is back online. Mr. Metelnick is in the proc-ess of revamping the site to give it a fresh, new look. Be sure to visit www.wppanthers.com for school news and information. As well, the "Teacher Pages" feature of the site provides direct links to web pages maintained by individual teachers where information on homework, assignments, and due dates can be found. As the fall progresses, more teacher pages will be available. Be sure to check periodically for updates to the school website and to individual teacher pages.

To figure out how much it would cost to buy a dozen eggs from the “P&W Grocery Store”, you would just have to add the trav-eling cost to the cost of a dozen eggs.

$2.08 + $3.96 = $6.04 Since the “Onville Grocery Store” has the price for 18 eggs, you must first divide the cost of the eggs by 18 to get the cost of each egg.

$6.30 ÷ 18 = $ 0.35 Next, you must multiply the cost of each egg by 12 to find the cost of a dozen eggs

$0.35 x 12 = $4.20 Finally, you must add the cost of the dozen eggs to the travel cost to find out the total cost.

$4.20 + $1.29 = $5.49

Now you can compare the two prices to see which route will cost you less money.

P&W Grocery =$6.04 Onville Grocery = $5.49

“Toys for Tots” is a charitable endeavour which was initiated by the Peel Regional Police in 1993, in partnership with the Salvation Army and Canadian Tire. During the months of November and December off duty members of Peel Regional Police volunteer several hundred hours to collect cash, Canadian Tire money, and new unwrapped toys donated by the public which are used to purchase or give as Christmas gifts for many children in need. Here at Williams Parkway we would like to kindly ask everyone to check their glove boxes or any other corner of your home and please generously donate any Canadian Tire money you may have to Toys for Tots campaign that is initiated by Peel Regional Police.
