+Case Summary
Experian, a unit of London-based GUS-PLC, runs one of the largest credit reporting agencies in US.
It wanted to create new business opportunities by expanding beyond credit checks for automobile loans.
If it could collect vehicle data from nation’s various motor-vehicles department and blend it with data like change-of-address records, then its Experian automotive division could sell this data to various customers like automotive retailers and toll collectors.
+Case Summary Contd….
The biggest challenge to Experian was to blend the data from different government depts. which were in different formats
Fortunately off-the-shelf software tolls for extracting, transforming and loading data (ETL tools from vendors like Informatica, Oracle, Sybase etc) makes it economical to combine very large data repositories.
Using ETL tools along with IBM’s DB2 database system, Experian Automotive created a database that processes 175 million transactions per month and has created a variety of new streams of revenues.
Now, for $10.99 a query, Experian can make available via the web the ownership history for any vehicle in the US.
+Case Summary Contd….
The new automotive database – includes Experian’s own corporate records, data from 30000 credit granters and address-change information licensed from the US-postal department. The result- Experian offers more comprehensive information than that maintained by state DMV and auto manufacturers
This gold mine of information will help the auto-parts and automakers to recall their customers efficiently about repairs, replacement and upgrades.
Experian’s automotive database is the 10th largest in the world. But the company says the relational database is managed by just three IT professionals.
+The Issues of the case
How do the database software tools discussed in this case help companies exploit their data resources?
The companies of present day have a vast repository of data. The problem is to derive meaning and using this data as a business strength.
It is evident from the EXPERION case that the data resources can be utilized to create new business opportunity and increase profitability of the organization. In doing so the database software tools play a major role.
+The Issues of the case
The different database resources will be in different formats. It will be very difficult to inter-relate these resources and have an integrated database system. Fortunately the ETL and other database software tools helps to have an effective and efficient integrated database system.

+The Issues of the case
What other business opportunities could you recommend to Experion that would capitalize on their automotive database?
The other business opportunities that Experion can capitalize on are
