Music and Pop Culture

The critique of pop culture

• Three main points:

1. Mostly aimed at making profit2. Creates a standardized mass indulged product3. Changes the artist into a worker

• Popular culture is standardized and stereotyped focusing on pleasing the biggest possible audience with the cheapest (most easily affordable ) „product“.

Impact on audienceProposed Harmful effects on people who use

it:

Ingenuine gratification involving sex and violence

Distracts people from focusing on real problems

Trivial and culturally comfortable products

NOT YET SUPPORTED BY ACTUAL DATA

The effects (proposed)The poor indulge more in pop culture (more

prone to stress, mental illness…)

Aggression (deeper causes)

Sexual behavior (pornography - norms haven't changed much)

No serious evidence, Correlation not causation!

Popular musicEvery generation complains about the music

Disintegrating values?

Is it really that different?

Most common words?

More hedonistic - partying and dancing, lust .

Love is still by far the most common

Racial diversity

Cultural shift from less to more diverse. Becoming more and more mixed as time goes by.

Combining into something new, stronger than before?

ConclusionPopular culture has faced much critique (assembly line, standardized, profit seeking)

Sometimes unfairly (more aggression, sexual behavior - not confirmed)

Positives (cultural diversification, maybe more open minded society)
