UNIT: SOME BASIC
CONCEPTS OF CHEMISTRY
TOPIC: LAWS OF CHEMICAL
COMBINATIONS
LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS
In a chemical reaction the total mass of the reactants consumed is equal to the total mass of the products formed.
In other words, matter can neither be created nor be destroyed.
LAW OF DEFINITE PROPORTIONS
The same compound always contains the same elements combined together in the same fixed proportion by mass.
In other words , every compound has a fixed composition by weight.
LAW OF MULTIPLE PROPORTIONS
When two elements combine to form more than one compound, the different masses of one of the elements which combine with a fixed mass of the other bear a simple ratio to one another.
LAW OF RECIPROCAL PROPORTIONS
If an element A combines with an element B in the ratio x:y an combines with another element C in the ratio x:z , then if B and C are to combine, they do so in the ratio y:z or a simple multiple of it.
GAY-LUSSAC’S LAW OF GASEOUS VOLUMES
This law states that, when gases combine to form gaseous products, a simple ratio exist between the volumes of the reactants and the products at constant temperature and pressure.
