To begin this topic we done a mood board on different eras from the book. In our group we got given the 80’s.

For my role in this i looked at props and the different houses and what they looked like at the time to fit into my role as a set decorator and a set builder.

I first went to a prop house (National Theatre Costume and Prop hire to get an idea of what would be in the house in this time period. In the book she does state that she does not change the house and hasn’t since the 60’s. This meaning that the objects in the house would be from this time period also. The houses in Dalston

were built in the 1800’s. So the house that she lived in would of been a house built then so i had to look at props and the houses from that time period also.

These are a few of the props that we thought related to the book

The houses were built in the 1800’s and would of been quite large. Here is a photo from the Geffrye Museum of an 1800’s house

This is an 1900s house This could also be what a house in the book will look like. Along with going to this museum i also

went to Dalston and to the streets that are mentioned in the book to see what the houses

around that area looked like.

“I waited for Sam on the corner of Amhurst Road and Dalston Lane”

The windows in these houses will be the same ones that were there when it was built. These are windows that were on Amhurst road and this gave me an idea of windows now and windows back then. On this photos it

shows the very old windows which are in the middle and those would be the ones that will of been in the book as you can tell they havent been renewed at all. Also with the windows they would have net curtains. In the

Geffrye Museum they had net curtains in the 1800’s which would still be used in houses in the book and even now.

This was the windows and the net curtains in the museum and the photo above is a house on Amhurst road with

net curtains.
