What do we mean by progressive or modern education?

From the dictionary definition: progressive education means of, relating to, or influenced by a theory of education characterized by emphasis on the individual needs and capacities of each child and informality of curriculum. Modern: of, or pertaining to recent times, or to the present; not ancient.

What is the purpose and aim of a modern education? Or, put more simply, why do people go to school?

It seems to be a common attitude that the highest good  of education is to become successfully and lucratively employed.

Young children no doubt attend to their studies in part due to compulsion, but what of the majority of young adults who sacrifice time, money, and other pursuits to attend the educational institution of their choice.

Should be to focus on individual as well as social aim development of an individual - physically, mentally and spiritually is well known aim of education with emphasis on social transformation aiming at reconstructing society to make it modernized, productive, participative, and value oriented nation committed to its constitutional obligations. Developing physical and mental faculties. Acquiring the capacities of understanding, appreciation and expression through word and act as well as to make children confident and self-dependent.

The era of globalization has placed extreme pressure on our government to produce highly specialized and technical personnel in a relatively short period of time. Given the rapid changes and developments in the field of information technology and emergence of knowledge-based society, the Philippines has to reorient the thrust of its educational system to meet the growing needs and demands of a highly competitive world market.

Given the scarce resources of the national government , there is a need to be more cost effective and innovative in our approach to finance school modernization program

a.) Provide broad framework for the institutionalization of a comprehensive and sustainable modernization program for the public school.

The school modernization and innovation bills aims to:

b.) Encourage the school to become more innovative and resourceful in developing and implementing programs geared towards modernization.

c.) Develop mechanisms that will define the roles and responsibilities of the officials from the regional, division down to the school levels in the implementation of the school modernization program.

d.) Provide mechanism on how the private sector can participate the program.

e.) Define regional and school modernization plans responsive to the needs of the students in the area.

The bill also seeks to establish school modernization and innovation trust fund which will augment the regular appropriations that will provide under the annual General Appropriation Act to finance the priority program for school modernization and improvement of the public elementary and secondary schools.

a.) Computerization of public elementary and high schools.

b.) Upgrading of Libraries in public elementary and secondary schools.

c.) Promotion of an integrated distance-learning program.

d.) Upgrading of Science Laboratories.

The members of the private sector are hereby encouraged to provide technical and/or financial support to the schools as they pursue their modernization plan. The private corporations, foundations, business groups or individuals who shall provide support to modernization programs shall be allowed to deduct from their gross income one hundred percent(100%) of the expenses directly used to finance the implementation of the program is the schools.

The K to 12 program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education(six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School and 2 years of Senior High School).
