- The John Newbery Medal is named for a British bookseller.
- The medal shall be awarded annually to the author of the most
distinguished contribution to American literature for children
published by an American publisher in the United States in English
during the preceding year.
- (Children are defined as persons of ages up to and including
fourteen.)

- To encourage students to read a variety of genres.
- To expose students to quality literature written by a variety
of authors.
- To promote the Newbery Medal.

Criteria
- 1. The Award is restricted to authors who are citizens or
residents of theUnited States.
- 2. The book must be a self-contained entity, not dependent on
other media (i.e., sound or film equipment) for its enjoyment.
- 3. Books in a series do not qualify unless the book submitted
can stand alone.

reading lists.

- Book Club Members nominate their favorite books to the Top Ten

- The Top Ten list is revealed at the last book club
meeting.
- Students have two weeks to continue reading before the vote
takes places.

- Invite community members to be guest readers.
- Select a passage from each Top Ten book to be shared at
assembly.
- Prepare ballots for voting at the end of the assembly.

- Create smaller discussion groups.
- Meet during lunch periods instead of after school.
- Select fewer titles and purchase more copies of each
title.
- Show the video of the book discussion to interest students
before they sign up.
- Allow students to discuss books in random order.
