PATTERNS IN THRILLERS

The top 11 grossing thrillers on the-numbers.com are all PG-13. This shows me that the wider the audience for thriller movies, the more it can make in theatres.

Also, 19 out of 25 of the top grossing thrillers are PG-13. The other 6 are R rated. This pattern suggest that PG-13 is the easiest to get a large audience and therefore larger total gross.

In 2012, the genre of thriller reached the highest peak it had ever reached, garnering a market share of 14% and 191 million ticket sales. This is mostly due to a very popular thriller movie that was released in 2012 called The Hunger Games. The popularity of Thriller seems to peak and fall over a period of a decade, the lowest year was 2003 with 4% market share.

Since Thriller has a high gross per movie, they are quite in demand. There are a lot more Drama or Action movies so to ensure my thriller movie is successful I would need to make sure that it us up to par with the rest of the thriller movies being released. The average audience figures like for a thriller film is about 3.8 million tickets sold per movie.

RELEASE

Thrillers generally release a full theatre release. There are some cases where it is straight to DVD.

The audience for Thriller is diverse, but from the data shown in highest grossing thrillers it is clear that the 13-18 range is a huge part of this audience. Thriller movies that want to gross the most would have a PG13 release.
