Being Ethical

All of us know that IIM Ahmedabad is a leading management institute known for its faculty and continuous effort to disseminate knowledge. I came across its recent publication "BEING ETHICAL- Ethics is the foundation of business" Happily the concern has been expressed in following words of wisdom. "Can a Manager learn to be more ethical?" It is well understood that Business have to act in self interest butto what extent should they sacrifice ethical behaviour ?. The Attacker’s Advantage – Ram Charan

The Attacker’s Advantage is a navigator guide to the leaders and organizations.

The book opens with alarming realization ‘We feel uncertainty in our bones ’ and states, “Taking control of uncertainty is the fundamental leadership challenge of our time.” Ram Charan guides the reader on “How can I make decisions and lead when things change so unpredictably and fast?”

According to Ram Charan the structural uncertainty does not arise suddenly as it seems; more often than not there

are early warning signals that go unnoticed. He encapsulates this with apt examples from Nokia, Apple, GE and many others. To quote GE CEO Jeffery Immelts it is “to drive results through uncertainty.”

There are many new facets to the competencies of the leadership covered and with authenticity. Ram Charan stresses emphasis on ‘perceptual acuity’, seeing what catalysts see. Path breaking initiatives of Apple and Google in recruiting physicians and other health-care professionals with domain knowledge in diagnosis of disease might initiate change in some segments of health-care industry.

The book takes a reader through many new approaches for seeing opportunities in uncertainties. Some of them are ‘what to watch For, Tools to Build Perceptual Acuity, Ask “What’s New?”, Be a Voracious Reader, Watch the Social Scene, and many other significant ones. On taking a different perspective Vinod Kumar of Tata Communication remarks, “It’s training the mind to get out of the trap of linear thinking.”

It also opens to a very relevant point and that is opening up the mind to focus on short time frame which is part of longer journey of long time planning & strategy. The need of the day is skill in making the organization steerable and agile; The Attacker’s Advantage takes one through that possibility.
