Making REQUESTS, EXCUSES AN
Making REQUESTS, EXCUSES AND APOLOGIES Presented by: Laura Barrera
REQUESTS AND TWO-PART VERBSBasically, when we make a request, we ask someone for something, or we ask someone to do something.
Generally, when we make a simple request, we use two-part verbs such as: Turn down, put away, clean up, hang up, take out among others.
But if we want to make a request in a polite way, we usually use:can, could, and would you mind.
Hang up the clothes pleaseWould you mind hanging the clothes up please?
ANSWERING REQUESTSIf you want to answer a request in a positive way in English, you should use the following pattern:
Request:
Turn on the T.V please
Answer:
No problem, Ill turn it on.Ok, Ill turn it on.Alright, Ill turn it down.
EXCUSESIn the case, we are unable to accomplish a request, we have the possibility to answer this request by making an excuse through the following pattern:
Request: Could you please turn off the computer?Excuse:Im sorry, I cant turn it off right now; I have to do my homework.
APOLOGIESWhen you write an apology for a request is to tell someone that you are sorry for not being able of doing something at the moment.
Example: Request: Could you please hang up the phone?Apology:I do apologize for not hanging up the phone, I had to do my homework.I must apologize for...I apologize for...
