Why Did We Need Math Workshop?

Homework: maximizing time and purposeImprove differentiation in instruction and practiceStudents should work harder than teachersMeaningful formative and summative feedback Modified block scheduleAll students have clear learning and behavior

expectations

What Is Math Workshop?

Think of the apprenticeship model: a master instructs the apprentice and then gives him/her time to practice.

Comes out of reading/writing instructionBased on the Gradual Release of ResponsibilityFollows a predictable routineShifts the cognitive load from the teacher to the students

The Gradual Release of Responsibility Model

The Workshop Routine

“School should not be a place for young people to come to watch old people work.” - Harry Wong

Our Timeline for Adopting Math Workshop

3 years ago: modified block scheduleBook study with math departmentObserved workshop in other content area classroomsLast year: 2 coaching cycles with literacy coach, first 10 days

agendaThis year: 1 coaching cycle with literacy coach, conferring

focus, for all levels of math

What Does Math Workshop Look Like In Our Classrooms?

Classroom Layout

Classroom Layout

Warm Up

Mini Lesson

Activates background knowledgeModels thinking: think-alouds vs.

showing examples Demonstrates use of toolsModels math content or practices Sets expectations for work time

Check for Understanding:

Students collaborate with peers and teachers to apply learning from the mini-lesson and engage in mathematical problem solving.

Collaborative Practice

Independent Practice

Reflection

Recap of the learning at ANY time during the class.

Reflection helps students monitor their own thinking, integrate ideas into their schema, and adjust their understanding with each learning task.

Building Toward Success: The First Ten Days

BUILD COMMUNITY: Set the stage for a successful classroom environment that supports workshop model

Results

“Math workshop builds student ownership of the content, invites learners to flex their mental muscles, and ensures that the procedures and ideas actually make sense to the learner.”

-Wendy Ward Hoffer
