Early Voyages to Asia

Prince Henry of Portugal – Azores, Africa in 1421

1487 – Bartholomew Diaz discovered Cape of good Hope

1498 - Vasco de Gama reached Calicut, India

1492 - Christopher Columbus discovered the New World

1500 - Vicente Dinzon discovered Brazil

1513 - Nunez de Balboa discovered Panama and Pacific Ocean

7 June 1494, divided the newly discovered lands outside Europe between Portugal and Spain along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde islands (off the west coast of Africa).

King Charles I of Spain sponsored Magellan Expedition.

5 Ships: flagship Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepcion, Santiago, and Victoria

1520, Discovered the Strait going to the Pacific Ocean.

1521, reached in Marianas Island but renamed Isla de Ladrones.

1521, March 17 – Reached Samar. Landed at Homonhon

In Limasawa, Magellan committed a blood compact with Rajah Kulambo and Ago.

March 31 - held the First Mass (Limasawa). The Archipelago of St. Lazarus.

8 April 1521 - Arrived at Cebu. Magellan committed a Blood compact with Rajah Humabon.

Juan de Salcedo conquered Taytay, Cainta, Ilocus Sur (Villa Fernandina de Vigan), Morong, Tayabas and Polilio Island.

De Goiti conquered majoirty of Central Luzon and Pangasinan.

Legaspi died on Aug. 20, 1572
