A Question for Everybody

Have you ever heard the brand

war between Mac and PC?

Page 3: Macintosh vs. windows

Introduction

Everything started with the idea of Douglas Engelbart, an American engineer working at the Stanford Research Institute. The idea of a mouse driven graphical user

interface back in the 1960s. Researchers at Xerox Corporation were

inspired by the idea and made 'Xerox Star 8010 Document Processor in 1981 for $17,000. It did not become commercial successful.

Introduction

In 1981, IBM computers was also released but it is just a huge hit on business industries and not on home markets. As a result, IBM bought the Operating

System from Microsoft which is “MSDOS” and installed it in all of their hardwares.

Other manufacturers were then able to copy the IBM hardware design and ship their 'Clones' with copies of MSDOS purchased directly from Microsoft.

Page 6: Macintosh vs. windows

Introduction

As a result, even without IBM's approval or participation, their PC became an open standard with virtually unstoppable economies of scale. By 1990 IBM Compatible PCs captured an 80% market share, by 2000 97%. This has then led Microsoft stay ahead of

the competition against Mac.

BUT!!

Page 8: Macintosh vs. windows

Introduction

Although IBM PCs running MSDOS dominated the market, Apple will be forever remembered as the innovative company behind the first mass market GUI based computer. Steve Jobs actually visited Xerox in 1971 and saw

the demonstration of Xerox Star in its development stage.

He then saw a potential and work on it. By the time Xerox released the Xerox Star 8010

in 1981, Apple were already hard at work on their own GUI based computer.

Introduction

In 1983 Apple finally released their first GUI based computer. Unfortunately the "Lisa" computer was an

expensive machine targeted at business and academia which proved to be a commercial failure.

A year later (1984) Apple launched their successful "Macintosh" computer for consumers. Till then, Macintosh battled out with Windows by

targeting a niche market that would patronize Mac.

Conclusion

Both Macintosh and Windows have their own strengths and weaknesses as a Operating System.

The bottom line is, your very own preference and lifestyle will dictate which of the computer brand is more compatible to you.
