Children’s Development in Art

“Motions and the Marks They Make”

Children discover that the actions of their body make changes in the material

Children discover the variety of lines, marks, shapes and colorsthey can create in each medium.

“Finding Out About Line, Shape, and Color”

“Designing”Children understand the basic vocabulary of their material

and are able to consciously arrange them to form a new, unified whole.

“Simple Images”Children combine shapes and lines to create representations of basic categories: people, animals, vehicles, houses.

There is no need to rush development: the more a child explores with a material, the richer his or her later representations will be.

AutonomyThe child is the author of their work from the beginning to the end of the art experience.

As much as possible, children take part in both set-up and clean-up of art materials.

The goal of responding is to help children reflect on the choices they have made and model language through which they can articulate their own discoveries.
